My 4yo son was mocked by other mums for wearing bike shorts

I was furious when I heard a group of mums laughing about my four-year-old son’s favourite shorts: Was I wrong for letting him wear them?

  • He likes to wear bike shorts

A mum has been left fuming after two women dared to laugh at her four-year-old son’s choice of shorts at daycare.

The furious parent said she lets her son pick his clothes for school and doesn’t mind what he wants to wear as long as he’s dressed and ready to go.

More often than not he chooses bike shorts and prefers if they have exciting patterns.

But according to the mum some of the parents at drop off find it appropriate to make fun of the pre-schooler.

‘I can’t honestly imagine picking on what a small child wears, or any child for that matter. One of them asking if they’re his sister’s and laughed,’ she wrote on Mumsnet.

‘I know I shouldn’t care and I’ve never given it a second thought until now,’ she said.

The mum’s now questioning whether she has done the right thing letting her son choose the pants.

She posted a picture of the bottom half of the outfit which showed the leopard print shorts which feature rainbow, smiley and star ‘spots’.

And mums weren’t afraid to side with the bullies at the school gate.

‘To be honest, they aren’t very nice,’ one woman said.

‘No, they’re not “picking on what a small child wears” – they’re picking on what you’ve put on them,’ said another.

‘It’s the shape – cropped leggings- that would make them ‘girls’ shorts,’ added a third.

Some women said the mother is influencing her son by allowing him to shop in the girl’s section.

‘The girls clothes and boys clothes are segregated, you are influencing his decisions by getting him to shop in the wrong section it is distasteful,’ one woman said.

Others said they wouldn’t dress their own son in the shorts but noted the other mums shouldn’t be making comments for the youngster to hear.

‘If I saw a little boy wearing them I wouldn’t make rude comments/laugh,’ one said.

The mum was furious at first but now wonders if she is in the wrong

‘These would be cute on my daughter. I probably wouldn’t put this particular pattern on my son. But they should have just minded their business. Rude ladies,’ said another.

A few mums stood up for the devastated mum and her kids.

‘My twins wear shorts like that all the time (Fred and Noah) they are 3 year old boys – the shorts are fine,’ one mum said.

‘My 3.5 yo wears cycling shorts to stop his legs getting sore in hot weather as they are a tighter fit. Never had any issues and he looks super cute. I have no idea if they are boys or girls because I bought them online after typing in cycling shorts. They’re fine OP,’ said another.

‘Tell them to ‘f*** off’,’ others suggested.
