Princess Kate’s black fascinator was a surprising addition to her St David’s Day look – here’s why
On Wednesday, the Princess of Wales nailed her second ultra chic ensemble of the week to celebrate St David’s Day with her husband the Prince William with a visit to Combermere Barracks in Windsor.
A royal fashion muse in her own right, Kate never misses with her ever-elegant agenda that guarantees to combine timelessness with a nod to current trends, but she surprised royal sartorial fans today with her colour blocking agenda, as she donned a radically different to usual when accessorising with a head fascinator.
Kate stepped out in a longline red coat from Alexander McQueen – one of many in her epic scarlet coat collection. The tailored coat featured a sophisticated structured silhouette and two parallel buttons that sat high above the waist, giving the flattering illusion of a lengthier frame.

Not only is red appropriate to celebrate Wales’ national day, but the bright hue was the colour of the moment according to London Fashion Week AW23 last month. She paired the oh-so-trendy ensemble with her ever-reliable black Gianvito Rossi suede boots, diamond cluster stud earrings and punky leather gloves.
But the pièce de résistance (just pipping her leek-shaped brooch to the post), was a stunning black head fascinator that totally juxtaposed her red coat, giving a different, braver aesthetic to her usual formal attire.

The Princess has donned a plethora of iconic looks with a fascinator that we’re desperate to recreate, but she almost always matches her headpiece to the colour of her ensemble.
She usually tends to colour coordinate her headpieces
Other royals fashion icons including Meghan Markle and Princess Beatrice also tend to match their headpiece to their outfits.

The Princess has been on a streak of levelling up her looks recently. Her earring game is seriously strong right now, plus she’s nailed wearing London Fashion Week-approved A-line skirts and houndstooth patterns, and her decision to clash instead of coordinate proves to us yet again, she is an absolute style icon.
Whether you choose to match or clash your headpieces this year, both styles are incredibly chic and approved by royalty.
