The Chic List: Meet the ones that I love

The Chic List: Meet the ones that I love

I often joke to friends that I’m going to get a T-shirt with the words ‘Just…the one’ emblazoned on the back. It’s that time of year when you find yourself dressed in your summer finery in a friend’s garden, heels sinking into the grass, making small talk with strangers.

I love parties, and meeting new people can be a hoot, but what I dread is being cornered and interrogated by the Mummy Mob. You know – those friends who have been besties ‘for ever’ and hang around in packs.

When they meet new blood, prepare for interrogation. They start with some gentle chat about schools and holidays, but soon comes the first real question: ‘Where do you live?’ (Obviously meaning where can you afford to live?)

The second is sharper still. ‘How many children do you have?’ ‘One,’ I reply with an arched eyebrow because I know what inevitably follows… Awkward pause, eyeballs bulge, foreheads furrow, until they regain their composure and say, ‘Oh, just the one.’

It’s that word ‘just’ that makes me do an internal eye roll. ‘Just’ is left hanging in the air, implying something negative, some kind of failure.

At the Jacquemus Spring/Summer 2024 show last month, Diana-esque motifs were scattered throughout, including 80s-inspired frills

Of course I know that for women struggling to conceive a first, these conversations must be infinitely more painful.

But I’m very happy being a mum to one – and there’s absolutely nothing ‘just’ about him.

There are many benefits to ‘just one’ which I often feel like listing but don’t bother to because at this point I’ve escaped.

On a happier theme of just the one, here are some wardrobe additions to see you through summer.

The late Princess Diana’s fashion influence never seems to wane.

At the Jacquemus Spring/Summer 2024 show last month, Diana-esque motifs were scattered throughout, including 80s-inspired frills and a multi-strand sapphire and pearl choker. Yes, pearls are back – whether it’s a traditional string placed casually over a T-shirt or a pearl choker worn with an evening dress, the world is your oyster.

Diana was also a fan of Bermuda shorts, which are back, too. For extra style, team with a blazer or waistcoat.

Add heels for longer-looking legs.

Finally, drum roll for the long floaty skirt, a 70s (and super-flattering) classic that’ll give a bohemian touch to your outfits. Katie Holmes is a convert and was snapped wearing a floaty white version with a knitted jumper and buckled Miu Miu flats. Taylor Swift recently showed up at her recording studio in a romantic all-white look: a crop top and matching floaty skirt.

I found an ideal airy cream one by Casa Raki – perfect for holidays in the sunshine.

TWIRL POWER

Skirt, £220, Casa Raki, matchesfashion.com

Wear this 70s-inspired floaty skirt by Casa Raki with a cropped tee or over a swimsuit while on holiday. Founded by fashion photographer Josefina Alazraki Theo, the brand is my latest go-to for laidback linen pieces.

THE INSIDE STORY

Swimsuit, £49, cos.com

A reversible swimsuit is such a good idea. This one by Cos is the perfect choice to pack for extended holidays – it’s fully reversible, so you can switch between the orange and floral-print sides. Slip it on with a linen shirt and the matching bucket hat for poolside lunches.

MY NEW CRUSH

The London-born star plays Seema Patel, who, when she first meets Carrie, reveals she regards her relationships with her handbags as among the most fulfilling in her life

When it comes to style on the second series of And Just Like That…, Sarita Choudhury is my new favourite. The London-born star plays Seema Patel, who, when she first meets Carrie, reveals she regards her relationships with her handbags as among the most fulfilling in her life. Off screen, she favours elegant tailoring, monochrome ensembles and feather-embellished silk dresses. My kind of girl.
