Dr Dray is a board-certified dermatologist, YouTuber, and skincare expert who dispenses her expert knowledge online. She discussed how to get rid of age spots.

She has an enormous 234K followers on her TikTok account @drdrayzday where she boasts a huge 3.2M likes for her tips and tricks.

The MD shares her expertise on her Instagram too, where she has 442K followers, and on her Youtube account where she has an enormous 1.73M subscribers.

She took to her TikTok to discuss an age-old problem for older skin, age spots, or sun spots. Thankfully, the expert has detailed three products to help and they don’t cost a fortune.

“I’m a dermatologist, let’s talk three products for improving age spots,” she said.

The first product is one well-known for its anti-ageing properties. Dr. Dray said: “Number one, a retinoid. Now, this is adapalene, a regular one you buy over the counter without a prescription for acne. But when used consistently you may find it improves the appearance of age spots and sun damage.”

Adapalene is a topical retinoid and you can buy it in your local Boots. Two options that are easily available include the La Roche-Posay Effaclar A.I. Breakout Corrector, £13, or the CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum with Ceramides & Niacinamide for Blemish-Prone Skin, £19.

The skin expert went on: “Number two, an alpha hydroxy acid whether it be like glycolic or lactic. These ingredients help increase the rate of skin cell turnover, smoothing out the surface of the skin and helping to lighten age spots.”

The doctor suggested the CeraVe Blemish Control Gel, £12.50, but there are lots of products with alpha hydroxy acid, also known as AHA.

Last but not least, the doctor went on: “And the most important, of course, you guessed it, is going to be sunscreen. You need a sunscreen not only to help lighten up existing age boss but to prevent more from occurring in the future.”

What causes age spots?

Age spots are caused by UV light, which causes more melanin to be produced in the skin as a response. The best way to avoid these is to stay out of the sun and to use sunscreens as much as possible. Burning is incredibly bad for the skin, damaging DNA, and will cause age spots and – even worse – cancer.

How to avoid age spots

  • Stay out of the sun between 10am and 2pm when the sun is at its strongest
  • Use SPF and reapply it frequently
  • Wear clothing that covers up your skin and a wide-brimmed hat

Three types of age spots

Cherry Hemangiomas

These small red dots are caused by an overgrowth of blood vessels.

Lentigines

These are “sun spots” and are flat darker spots that appear on skin that has been overexposed to the sun.

Seborrheic keratosis

These can be caused by overexposure to the sun too. They can be flat or raised, but they look scaly and a little like warts.
