Strictly Come Dancing star James Bye and professional dancer Amy Dowden appeared on BBC’s The One Show alongside presenters Alex Jones and guest host Craig Revel Horwood. During their conversation, Amy reflected on her time on the show as she spoke about the secret gesture she gives the no-nonsense judge.

Ahead of their performance on Saturday, Eastenders star James Bye and pro dancer Any Dowden appeared on Friday’s episode of The One Show.

Turning to Amy, Alex asked if she ever wanted to disagree with the judges’ feedback after the number of hours they put into rehearsals.

Before she could respond, Craig answered: “She definitely says it after the show, I know that much, it’s true, it is true.”

After laughing, Amy replied: “Dancing is subjective, isn’t it? Especially after the choreography and my taste is slightly different to the other pros, especially to the judges.

“I guess for us pros, we have seen from a Monday morning, you know, still learning to walk, I guess the dancing way, to how much they have improved by Saturday.”

Turning to Craig, she added: “Whereas, you guys see the finished product on a Saturday night, so we’ve seen the hard work and how far that journey’s become.

“When it comes to dancing, it’s like everything in life, you might like the colour red and my favourite colour’s pink, so there’s always going to be certain things that we’re going to disagree on.”

Craig then probed on her thoughts after the performance, as they approach the judging panel for feedback.

As the dancers wrap up their routines, they are usually met with a standing ovation and applause from the audience.

Host Tess Daly would then guide them over the judges Craig, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Shirley Ballas.

Craig asked: “What’s going through both your minds when you’re coming over to me, is the question I really wanted to ask.

“Because I don’t give anything away, I have a poker face, whereas Shirley might stand up and applaud or Motsi’s screaming and the other judges show their emotion, I very rarely do.”

Amy admitted: “You’re the only one after six years I still don’t get.

“I’ll never forget my first turn of you, my dad said to me apparently shouting in the living room, ‘Look at Craig’s grumpy face, he doesn’t like it still.’

“And then you said something like, ‘Fabulous,’ so you still don’t know.”

Amy revealed her gesture: “But I try to make you smile, I’m always grinning at you at the other end, but you’re still.”

Craig then defended his poker face and said: “But no it doesn’t wash, well I’m there with my hat on as a judge.”

Turning to James, Amy continued: “That’s what I was saying to you tonight, you get into you’re professional mode, you sit down in your there to critique.”

To which James added: “Well, even you’re eight, I did not predict your eight, I thought ‘this was a six or a seven’ and then the eight comes up.”

“And that’s what keeps it interesting,” Christine stated.

Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturday at 6.50pm on BBC One.
