Antiques Roadshow guest wowed by value of brooch she feared was fake

Antiques Roadshow guest reacts to valuation

Portchester Castle in Hampshire provided the setting for a classic series 44 episode of Antiques Roadshow, airing once more on BBC One on Sunday, April 30.

And there were plenty of hidden gems for the team to take a look at, from a Victoria Cross medal awarded during the First World War to a water-damaged letter retrieved from a member of the Titanic’s crew.

But arguably one of the most surprising valuations from the episode came from Joanna Hardy who met with a guest to peruse over her collection of assorted jewels.

While guests often bring jewellery onto the show to hear about its potential value, the guest this around had her hopes set relatively low as she feared the collection was actually fake.

Joanna revealed this as the two got together to go over the items, with the expert saying: “There were two comments you made when you saw me laying out your jewels here.

“One was, ‘Gosh, I haven’t seen these in a very long time.’

“And the second thing was that you were hoping they were all real.”

“Exactly,” the Antiques Roadshow guest admitted. “So I seriously hope they are real!”

Joanna described the arrangement of jewels as “eclectic” before the guest explained the wide variety had been gifted to her by an old boyfriend.

“He might be watching thinking, ‘Why did I give her all those?!’” Joanna joked before she began inspecting the jewels.

Joanna’s attention first turned to a pair of ruby earrings which she had a hunch had started life as a pair of cufflinks.

The expert then perused over another pair of earrings as well as a 1920s Rolex watch.

Despite piquing Joanna’s interest, the guest admitted: “I don’t wear any of this. I feel really bad that I don’t wear any of it. I haven’t even got them out the cupboard for a very long time.”

However, the two stars of the show were a pair of brooches that Joanna was keen to examine.

Joanna confirmed the first was indeed made of real diamonds, which prompted a “phew” from the guest as Joanna confirmed: “They’re all real, everything is real.”

The Antiques Roadshow star then singled out a sapphire brooch which had caught her eye as it included the flag for the Royal London Yacht Club.

“This is beautifully made,” Joanna said as she held up the flag brooch before she revealed the pair of brooches together would fetch the most value.

The diamond brooch alone would fetch between £3,000-4,000 according to Joanna while the sapphire flag brooch could also expect to earn a £3,000 price tag.

“Golly,” the guest replied. “And I didn’t even know if it was real so that’s really impressive. Thank you, wow!”

However, if all of the jewels were sold as one lot, Joanna claimed it could fetch between £13,000 and £15,000.

“That’s a very nice surprise,” the guest added before quipping: “Why on earth did I let him go?!”

Antiques Roadshow continues Sunday on BBC One.
