BBC sparks uproar as EastEnders fans rage over teen pregnancy plot

EastEnders: Lily Slater gets a pregnancy scan

Fans of EastEnders were outraged on Monday night as the current teen pregnancy storyline continued with parents to be Lily Slater (played by Lillia Turner) and Ricky Mitchell Jr (Frankie Day) heading for her 20-week scan. At just 12-years old the character of Lily is one of the youngest mums in soap history, but viewers are not happy with how the story is being handled and took to Twitter in their droves to slam the “disgusting storyline”.

The teens tender ages were highlighted in the episode as Ricky’s mum Sam (Kim Metcalfe) made a valid point.

She told her son. “You’re going to have a five-year-old before you can even drink.”

This instilled panic in the dad-to-be who announced he was no longer attending the scan.

However, he was talked around by Lily’s mum Stacey (Lacey Turner).

She told the terrified teen: “Getting my daughter pregnant wasn’t the brightest thing. Being a parent isn’t easier…you just need to choose whether you’re going to be a good one.”

Following the scan, the young parents to be seemed delighted and announced they were going to throw a gender reveal party, but viewers were far from happy for them.

A user called @grumpyguy64 wrote: “What made them think this story line with Lily was a good idea it’s f****** disgusting.”

@yorit1 said: “Is ee ever gonna start treating the lily storyline how they should or is a 12 year old being pregnant just all fun and cute now? #EastEnders.”

The comments continued apace with @MrsArthur Fowler, venting: “Stacey Slater spoilin’ that Lily with ice cream! Should be punishin’ ‘er for not keepin’ ‘er legs together if you asks me.” (sic)

“Why are #EastEnders normalising teenage pregnancies? Lily and Ricky Jr are practically babies themselves!” added @MissLionHeart.

Meanwhile @ElloTeenah chimed in: “Are they going to make Lily and Ricky an actual couple or are we going to see children try and co-parent?”

Another fan called @simbanrat wrote: “Every single thing to do with Lily and this awful pregnancy storyline makes me roll my eyes. I just can’t with it.”

It is not the first time EastEnders has tackled a teen pregnancy storyline as Michelle Fowler (Susan Tully) famously announced that she was pregnant in April 1989 when the character was just 16-years-old.

The identity of the baby’s father caused a frenzy among fans and was eventually shockingly revealed to be Den Watts (Leslie Grantham), the father of her best friend Sharon (Letitia Dean).

And in 2000 a then 15-year-old Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) gave birth unexpectedly to her daughter Bex, having not even known she was pregnant.

The father was fellow 15-year-old Martin Fowler, and they were not a couple at the time as Sonia was dating Jamie Mitchell (Jack Ryder).

Sonia gave the baby up for adoption but later got her back and went on to marry Martin, although they eventually divorced.

EastEnders is on BBC One Monday-Thursday at 7.30pm and you can catch up on previous episodes on the BBC iPlayer.
