BBC worried as The Crown is set to tell the story of the Diana documentary drama

BBC bosses are braced for further humiliation over the Princess Diana scandal – thanks to popular Netflix drama The Crown.

The new series will reflect “what is now known’’ about the circumstances that led to the Panorama interview with the princess and how she was treated.

The 1995 TV grilling by former BBC reporter Martin Bashir made global headlines as the Princess of Wales spoke openly about her marriage to Charles and revealed all about his lover Camilla Parker Bowles.

Diana famously said: “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

Last year, a report by Lord Dyson concluded the BBC covered up “deceitful behaviour” by Bashir to secure the interview.

It led to calls from the Duke of Cambridge for it never to be aired again.

And on Thursday (July 22), the broadcaster was forced to make a grovelling apology and pay big damages to former royal nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke.

It was revealed Bashir made up allegations that she had an affair with Prince Charles as part of his plot to “trick” Diana – who died in 1997 – into giving him an interview.

Scriptwriters working on the fifth series of The Crown, due later this year, have worked new details about the Diana chat into their storyline.

A source close to the show said: “It will reflect what we now know about how the interview was obtained and how Diana was treated.”

Dominic West will play Charles, with Elizabeth Debicki as Diana.

The BBC recently agreed it would no longer broadcast clips from Bashir's interview.

Director-general Tim Davie said: "Now we know about the shocking way that the interview was obtained, I have decided that the BBC will never show the programme again, nor will we license it in whole or part to other broadcasters."
