Casualty fans feel sick at improv episode as scriptwriters shouldnt worry

Casualty fans weren't impressed by the show's first ever improvised episode – as some claimed it made them "feel sick".

The BBC medical soap made history this weekend with a completely unscripted episode focused on the paramedics, but despite the grave subject matter amid ongoing NHS budget cuts, fans weren't loving it.

Some claimed the show's writers "don't need to worry" about keeping their jobs after the episode, entitled The Thin Green Line, aired.

Taking to Twitter to share their thoughts, one fan said: "Improv #Casualty – interesting concept, gives the programme a documentary feel, but I don't think the scriptwriters need to worry about their jobs any time soon."

As someone else agreed: "I don’t usually enjoy these ‘special’ episodes of #Casualty always a bit overrated [in my opinion]. @BBCOne have the excellent #Ambulance to show how it really is out there."

Another fan was left distracted by the "wobbly" camerawork, adding: "I like the concept of this #Casualty but the camera is just giving me motion sickness. So wobbly."

"Why does #BBCCasualty insist on doing these gimmicky episodes?" someone else fumed.

A fifth fan moaned: "I don't like how special episodes are always shot differently!"

However, others were full of praise for the special and the issues within the healthcare system it highlighted.

One fan posted: "Got a feeling this is going to be a tough but important #Casualty watch! (First things first, isn’t Jan a dream?)"

As another said: "Very different episode of #Casualty tonight highlighting the amazing work our paramedics do under ridiculous circumstances.

"These people are quite literally the lifeblood of our country and we should be doing all we can to support them in getting better working conditions."

A third eager viewer wrote on Twitter: "This episode of #Casualty is so, so harrowing but so important. Every person on the Thin Green Line are everyday heroes – we don't give them enough appreciation in this world!"

Speaking about the special episode, executive producer Jon Sen wanted to reflect the "changing pressures" surrounding ambulance crews.

He said: "We're in a constant dialogue with medical advisors and we were really aware of the changing pressures facing paramedics.

"And so we decided we wanted to focus on a story that was purely about them."
