Over the years, the residents of Weatherfield have had dramatic and shock fuelled Christmas episodes around the festive season. However, this year, Coronation Street writer Iain McLeod revealed that they have toned down the drama to make way for a more “family orientated” special of the ITV soap.

Viewers have high hopes for the Christmas period, as Fiz Stape (played by Jennie McAlpine) and Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) should finally tie the knot on Christmas Day.

Daisy Midgely (Charlotte Jordan) and Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) are also set to prepare for their own nuptials as Daniel pops the question.

Touching on what’s to come over the Christmas period, Iain told Express.co.uk and other press: “The episodes are fun, warm and family-orientated.

“Corrie has historically always done that. A few years ago, we went a little bit Die Hard with Gary Windall [Mickey North], Shona Platt [Julia Goulding] and the funfair.

“I absolutely loved that. It allowed us to do a thriller-ish conceptual trailer for it, so it was all very exciting.

“But we’re right in our wheelhouse now with this Christmas. It’s got loads of comedy, family fun and warmth.

“I cried twice in the viewing – and I’m not given to tears! It’s really moving and lovely. It’s not sad, but in a ‘warm your cockles’ way.”

He continued: “I really think fans are going to love it. The Fiz and Tyrone strand is the centrepiece and really good fun.

“It’s just the right amount of silly with brilliant writing, and the performers are exemplary, as they are across the show generally.

“Alan and Jennie are marvellous and the kids are great. It feels totally Christmassy and it’s totally Corrie – a warm, good-spirited end to the year for us.”

Other characters who are set to see some drama over the festive period include Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) and Laurence Reeves (Robert Shaw Cameron).

In upcoming scenes, Sean Tully (Anthony Cotton) announces that he and Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne) will be heading to the Peak District with Laurence.

Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) and George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) are both happy for Sean, but they also notice Todd’s jealousy.

During a moment alone with Todd, a wary Laurence points out that it’s obvious Todd doesn’t like him. Laurence admits that he’d like a chance to change Todd’s mind.

When Laurence later heads off to leave, Todd leans in for a kiss. Will Laurence respond?

Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and Tracy McDonald (Kate Ford) also face drama this Christmas when they realise their house has been burgled.

They’re horrified to realise all the Christmas presents have gone from under the tree, with Steve reporting it to the police, with Daniel telling Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews) his engagement ring has gone.

Coronation Street has released its Christmas schedule, with fans eager to plan ahead after experiencing an unstable soap schedule recently due to the football.

However, there will not be a special New Year’s Day episode as some fans will have hoped for.

In past years, the soap has aired a New Year’s Day episode which would round up all of the drama from Christmas week.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8pm on ITV.
