Coronation Street fan favourite quits the cobbles in shock exit

Coronation Street fans found themselves in shock after a character left the soap this evening.

Carla Connor, who is played by Alison King, left the cobbles on Friday after she was pushed to the edge by Stephen Reid’s plan to spike her with drugs to induce a breakdown.

Stephen left himself into Carla’s flat while she was sleeping and put the oven on in an attempt to set it on fire and frame Carla.

Luckily, Roy turned up just in time to turn off the oven – but Carla was convinced she was the one who had left the appliance on.

“I’m not a child, I’m worse than a child,” she said. “What if you’d be on a night shift? If you’d have been asleep and I’d have turned the grill on, I could’ve burned this place down, I could’ve killed you.”

Carla told Roy and Peter that she needed help with her mental health and was advised to take a lengthy break from work. She then decided she would spend some time in a mental health clinic .

As Roy asked if she was sure about going, she told him: “If I want to get better, I have to be, don’t I? I don’t want to let you go. I’ve got to do it. Goodbye.”

Peter drove her to the clinic but Roy seemed to be having his doubts on whether Carla was really struggling with her mental health like before – or whether something else was going on.

Fans were devastated at Carla's exit, with one writing on social media: "This Carla storyline is really cruel. Please bring it to an end. Get rid of Steven asap".

Another person wrote: "Please protect Carla at all costs or there will be a riot I'm sure."

During Wednesday's episode, fans saw how Carla went to see Dr Gaddas, describing how each time she's suffered an episode, it feels like she's tripping on drugs with the doctor prescribing her diazepam.

Later, the Americans arrived at the factory to which Stephen reminded Carla how it's imperative that she's on top form.

Carla was left furious over Stephen's nerve and as she took charge, ordered him to make everyone tea.

Angry at being belittled, Stephen decided to double the dose of LSD in Carla's drink but his plan was almost thwarted by none other than Sally Metcalfe.

Sally popped over to remind Stephen of Carla's milk choice, offering to finish off the drinks herself. However, Stephen refused the help and then added more LSD into Carla's hot beverage.

Worried for Carla, Sally quickly went to get Peter Barlow where she pointed out to Stephen: "She was fine beforehand, when she told me to ask you about the milk."
