Corrie fans gobsmacked as they discover Dev Alahan’s link to newcomer Fern

Coronation Street fans have been left baffled by a hidden connection between Dev Alahan and cobbles newcomer Fern.

Fern was introduced earlier this year as Bernie Winter’s lookalike, as the pair came to blows over a blue coat, in a storyline that was pitched by Bernie actress Jane Hazelgrove.

Fern star Gabrielle Glaister was constantly being mistaken for Jane in real life, which prompted the curious doppelgänger plotline.

Now Corrie spoilers have confirmed that Bernie gets back in touch with Fern, admitting she’s up for any more dodgy jobs she can throw her way after rekindling her romance with Dev.

But fans have already uncovered a secret link between Fern and Dev, hinting that they could even get together with the Alahan patriarch cheating on Bernie.

Taking to Reddit, one fan pointed out that actress Gabrielle had another role on the cobbles prior to stepping into Fern’s shoes – and her previous character was romantically linked to Dev.

The user posted: “Anyone else find it a bit distracting that Bernie’s double Fern is played by the same actress who played Debs, Natalie’s sister, about 20 years ago?

“How many lookalikes is this woman meant to have!”

They added: “Debs also dated Dev if memory serves – he clearly has a type.”

Deborah ‘Debs’ Brownlow had a brief stint on the cobbles back in 2000. A beautician, Debs had worked on the cruise ships for a number of years until she reunited with her sister and struck up a brief flame with Dev.

While dating Duggie Ferguson, Debs ran off with her sister’s ex-boyfriend Vinny Sorrell and returned to her old job, fleeing Weatherfield forever.

Fans have already been busy predicting what Fern could get up to next, including switching places with Bernie for shifts down at the kebab shop.

One Twitter user cheekily penned: “Maybe Fern can pretend to be Bernie and do a shift in the kebab shop. #Corrie.”

Another gushed: “Fern & Bern. Spin-off show!”

While a third fan said: “I love the Bernie/Fern storyline but where is it going? Will it be like Bernie gets involved with Stephen, she finds out, he kills her but it turns out to be Fern? Or is it just a fun story?”

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm on ITV.
