Corrie spoilers see Claire Sweeney make her debut – and shes already causing trouble
Claire Sweeney is set to reclaim her crown as a soap queen tonight (Wednesday) with her first scenes in Coronation Street – and her character is already ruffling feathers on the cobbles.
Actress Claire found fame as Brookside's Lindsey Corkhill, but is about to resume life in soap land more than 20 years on as an explosive new character in the ITV soap.
She will make her debut on Wednesday as Cassie Plummer, who has some pretty major ties to Weatherfield residents.
Cassie is Evelyn's (Maureen Lipman) estranged daughter and is also the biological mother of Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall), although he has no idea and believes his mum is Jackie.
This week, Evelyn has been struggling with jealousy over Roy and Yasmeen's friendship, but decides to clear the air by inviting them both to the Bistro to talk through her feelings.
However, Evelyn doesn't realise that Cassie has arrived in town and has been secretly watching her all day – and she never makes it to the Bistro as she is waylaid by a worrying call.
Evelyn is contacted by the hospital to let them know that Cassie has been admitted as an emergency patient, with things getting even more concerning for her when she receives another call to tell her that Cassie has discharged herself.
When Evelyn decides to go home, she gets a huge shock to find Tyrone is greeting her with the news that someone called Cath has come to see her, and she finds that "Cath" is actually Cassie.
It leads to awkward scenes as Tyrone asks the pair how they know each other, because Evelyn has never told him that Cassie is his real mum who abandoned him at the station as a baby and who Evelyn believed was not fit to be a mother because of addiction issues.
Talking about her first days on set, Claire said: "The first day I didn’t say anything but on my second day I had a massive scene – a 14-page two-hander with Dame Maureen Lipman – so that was a baptism of fire!
"I didn’t need to worry because Maureen was so kind to me that she’d even taken me out to dinner the night before with castmate David Neilson, who plays Roy Cropper. Maureen went out of her way to make me feel more comfortable and that really helped. She’s amazing and working with her was like a masterclass."
There's another shock arrival on Wednesday, too, as Max gets a blast from the past when Lauren (Cait Fitton) returns.
Lauren was part of the shady group that groomed Max into far right terrorism, but now she is saying that her dad is in prison and she wants nothing more to do with him or his gang.
