Corrie star reveals Amy's 'fire' returns as she fights back after rape injustice

Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) has been struggling to cope since being raped by Aaron Sandford (James Craven) in horrifying Coronation Street scenes.

After being encouraged by her parents to report her ordeal to the police, Amy was left devastated when the case was dropped due to a lack of evidence, something which actress Elle Mulvaney explained was important for the soap to cover.

‘It’s about having the truth behind the storyline,’ she told Metro.co.uk.

‘You’ve got to remember that we’ve worked with lots of researchers and our research team has worked with the charity The School’s Consent Project, and they told us about how rare it is that a case would go to trial.

‘It’s something miniscule like 1% of cases actually get to trial, which is just ridiculous.

‘And that’s obviously of reported rapes, and there’s a statistic where it’s something like 90% of rapes don’t even get reported.

‘So, I think as a show we would be doing victims an injustice if we hadn’t portrayed that truly.’

Amy has since insisted that she made a mistake and got the situation wrong, despite clearly being affected by the horrific ordeal.

One factor that has made things significantly more difficult for her is that Aaron is still living on the street, as Elle explained.

‘Amy is definitely struggling.’ She told us. ‘She’s trying to keep her distance from him at all times, but its difficult because it’s only a small street.

‘She’s got friends who are friends with him, she knows that he’s still got his job, so there’s a lot of other things that go into it which is really quite difficult, because how do you come to terms with living across the street from your rapist?’

Upcoming scenes will see Amy finally confide in friends Summer and Aadi (Harriet Bibby and Adam Hussain), following a run in at a party with Aaron.

As things continue to get on top of her, she resorts to drinking, passing out in Victoria Garden, where she is found by a terrified Summer.

In the hospital, Amy admits to Steve and Tracy (Simon Gregson and Kate Ford) that she was raped, and she knows she needs help.

It seems that there is hope on the horizon for Amy in the near future, as Elle revealed that Amy will find her ‘fire’ again.

‘We’re going to see Amy gain a lot more confidence over the subject.’ Elle told us. ‘I feel like she will take control a bit more. We’ll see a bit more of Amy’s fire coming back.’

After an intense year of storylines for Amy, Elle Mulvaney has found herself nominated for Best Leading Performer at the British Soap Awards, something that she is ‘so excited’ about.

‘This is huge for me because it’s my first nomination, on my own, in an adult category.’ She told us.

‘It would be brilliant [to win], wouldn’t it? What an honour! How amazing.

‘I think it’s going to be a great night regardless and I think we’ve got lots of amazing nominees up from Corrie. We’ve got Sair Khan, Paddy Bever, Charlie Jordan and Ryan Prescott, so if anybody wins I’ll be happy to be honest with you!’
