Countryfile viewers seriously divided by Tom Heaps' pig farming report – but who's in the wrong? | The Sun

COUNTRYFILE viewers were left seriously divided after Tom Heap failed to mention Brexit when discussing the crisis pig farmers are currently facing.

Sunday evening's instalment of the BBC programme and saw Tom Heap speak with a number of experts about how the pork industry in the UK is declining.


Farmers are struggling to sustain their businesses due to the rise in energy prices and the cost of pig feed.

However, the segment left viewers divided with many questioning why Brexit wasn't mentioned at all.

Tom began the segment by explaining: "Britain's pig farms are in crisis.

"Rising costs and worker shortages have meant our farmers have lost £600million in the last two years.

"Pork prices have increased but nowhere near as fast as the rocketing cost of feed and energy.

"The situation is so bad farmers are losing around £52 per pig."

Chris Bogdan, who has bred pigs for over 30 years, admitted things had got so bad he was sending the rest of his pigs to be slaughtered.

Discussing the harsh reality of the industry, he revealed: "We're winding down and getting out of pig production. Everything's going for slaughter.

"It was either them or me. I just had to get out and still have a roof over my head. If I carried on there was a risk of losing everything."

Those watching at home were left divided about the root cause behind the crisis.

One person penned: "Their variety of troubles. No one talk about Brexit though, do they?"

Echoing their comments, someone else said: "Not a mention regarding Brexit during an item on pig farmers. Why not?"

While a third added: "Why no mention of Brexit? It's quite clearly the root cause of all this!"

Another argued that Brexit has nothing to do with it.

They affirmed: "Countryfile is a programme about farming life now. Brexit is a fact of life which farmers are having to deal with along with all the other variables in their lives."
