Death in Paradise’s Kris Marshall teases ‘new twist’ for spin-off series

Death in Paradise fans were thrilled when it was announced a spin-off series of the popular drama called Beyond Paradise was in the making. The series will be focusing on Kris Marshall’s character Humphrey Goodman as he adjusts to life in the Southwest of England. Ahead of the series airing, Kris teased there will be a new twist. 

The Love Actually actor said the show is based in a rural setting in the southwest. 

Kris recently revealed filming is set to start “within the next couple of weeks”, but he has kept other details under wraps. 

“We’re in the process now, we’ve got most of the main cast but we’re sort of casting some of the supporting roles,” he told Digital Spy. 

Beyond Paradise will follow on from Humphrey and Martha Lloyd’s (Sally Bretton) storyline in the original BBC One series. 

Martha made her first Death in Paradise appearance during season five when she bumped into her old friend Humphrey. 

Fans will recall Humphrey left Saint Marie in the Caribbean five years ago to be with his love interest, Martha.

The actor has appeared to confirm Humphrey and Martha are still together and will most likely be solving murders. 

Kris teased: “I can’t really say much about what happens, but what it is about the scripts that I really love, Tony Jordan’s done a beautiful job on the two or three scripts I’ve seen. 

“It’s exactly what you hope for in terms of if you’re a fan of Death in Paradise.”

“Obviously it’s not in the Caribbean, but it’s in its own paradise,” he added. “It’s got its own new twist on it.” 

The spin-off series, which will include six episodes, is due to air next year. 

Zahra Ahmadi will be playing DS Esther Williams, Dylan Llewellyn will portray PC Kelby Hartford and Felicity Montagu will play office support civilian Margo Martins. 

During a recent appearance on The One Show, Kris revealed: “We’re basically following Humphrey and his girlfriend Martha’s journey as they move in with the mother-in-law down in the South West.

“His new role is as the detective inspector of the local constabulary and it’s lots of fun.”

Calls for a spin-off have been circling in recent years following the success of Death in Paradise. 

BritBox’s Diederick Santer described the upcoming series as a “no brainer”.

“That comes with well-known IP, spin-offs, talent and location,” he added. “This is so important and really cuts through.

“We want to challenge producers a bit. If you say you want too much crime and mystery, it’s too formal.”
