EastEnders star Rita Simons was trapped naked in toilet

Former EastEnders actress Rita Simons has revealed details of an incident that left her stuck naked in a toilet and needing to be rescued by a co-star.

The actress, who played Roxy Mitchell on the BBC soap until 2017, is one of seven celebrities starring in the fifth series of Pilgrimage.

Pilgrimage is a BBC 2 reality show that sees famous faces trek 364km along the northern route of Portugal’s Fatima Way, which ended with a candlelit vigil in the Sanctuary in the city of Fatima for the virgin Mary.

The celebrities attended the vigil alongside nearly 70,000 pilgrims.

Speaking to TV Mag, Rita, who struggled with the walk at times due to a condition called scoliosis, revealed the encounter that saw her seek help from co-star Su Pollard while naked in a toilet.

‘One night we got back to our hostel and I was naked in the bathroom with Su, as you are,’ she explained, ‘and I just remember looking in the mirror and I was like, crack: ‘Oh Su, I’m stuck.’ I was stuck on the side.

‘I have quite bad scoliosis, so my spine is S-shaped and it’s really not great. It hurts a lot of the time.

‘The walking was hard because It’s really challenging when you’ve got scoliosis to carry the bag, but the crew were amazing with me and if I needed to stop they’d help me out.’

This new challenge is a far cry from Rita’s role as the wild and fun-loving Roxy Mitchell on EastEnders.

The blonde bombshell hit our screens with quite a force back in 2007, alongside sister Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack).

The sisters became synonymous with Albert Square, thanks to stories that saw them involved with affairs, murders and all sorts of other trouble.

Unfortunately, it all came to a watery end on New Year’s Day 2017, when Roxy and Ronnie tragically drowned in a swimming pool on Ronnie’s wedding day to Jack Branning (Scott Maslen).

Since leaving Walford, Rita has taken on roles in theatre, as well as ITV drama Professor T.

Pilgrimage will air on BBC 2 next week.
