In one of the final episodes of the popular series, Dick Strawbridge talked viewers through his plans to add a suspended conservatory to the existing chateau. Although the last eight years of Escape to the Chateau has seen both Dick and Angel Adoree taking on some tricky tasks, Dick admitted this one was “challenging” as the show begins to draw to a close.
Drawing a diagram, Dick explained: “At the back of the chateau there’s a little wall that goes down to water level.
“We’ve got the windows in the back here and we’re going to be building a conservatory.
“From the main floor up here in the air, as the floor comes up, it’s going to be ornamental, so it’s going to have little bits and pieces like that.
“And this is going to be a glass conservatory on the back of the chateau here.
“And it’s going to be suspended on little cast-iron posts. And this window will become a door. So the door’s there…”
He admitted: “Bit of a challenge, but it’s an interesting one because here we need to make sure that we get a little foundation for each of those posts.
“Robin, who’s at the end of the road, does metalwork. He says he can build me the metalwork to suspend my building in the air.
“I’ll be able to sit in there with my morning coffee and watch the world.”
Later, it was revealed the room was coming along nicely.
“I do like the fact that is so still and peaceful,” Dick commented.
The couple recently announced their plans to call the popular series to a close, much to the disappointment of fans.
The home improvement series has seen the family as they initially bought the chateau and has documented their entire journey of renovating it into a thriving home and business.
After nine seasons of chronicling their chateau journey, tonight’s instalment was the penultimate episode.
It was revealed in September that Dick and Angel were going to be moving on from the popular show.
They shared a message explaining the decision to their many fans.
In a joint statement, they wrote: “Our decision to buy a Chateau with no water, electricity, heating or sewage has taken us on the adventure of a lifetime and we could never have imagined what would unfold.
“The good, the bad and the ugly… We have cherished every second and love that we have a visual record to show Arthur and Dorothy when they’re older.”
Delving further into the reason behind the cancellation, Dick and Angel explained on Radio Times’ View From My Sofa podcast that it was because of their children.
Dick said: “[They’re] turning nine and 10 – they’ve had an innocence and joy in what we’ve done.
“We’ve got lots of things we still intend to do, but we want to protect the family part of it.”
Angel agreed with her husband, adding: “Absolutely. Finish on a high!”
Escape to the Chateau is available to watch on All4.
