Series seven of the BBC drama marks the end of the road for Jimmy Perez in Shetland after Douglas Henshall decided to leave the role after nearly a decade. When discussing the final scenes that he shot for the show, the actor revealed that it ended up being anticlimactic.

So far, Douglas’ final series in Shetland has kept audiences on edge as Perez tries to uncover the identity of a mysterious bomber.

At the end of the penultimate episode, fans saw yet another explosive being made which ponders the question of whether or not the DI will have a fatal ending.

Speaking to the BBC about his final time in the role, Douglas admitted that he’s sad to be saying goodbye to his character after nearly a decade of playing him.

The 56-year-old stated that although he’ll miss playing Perez, he doesn’t feel like playing a policeman for a while.

With an emotional attachment to the role, the actor was asked how he felt when filming his final scenes on set.

Not wanting to give the ending away to fans, he said: “My last scenes were filmed in a car park in Kilmacolm, which was very odd.

“We’d tried to wrap three times, but because of Covid, it kept being put back.

“It felt a little anticlimactic in the end.

“I did say a few words of thanks to everyone who was there but it’s impossible to encapsulate ten years of work.”

Douglas admitted that he doesn’t think it will feel real to him that his time on Shetland has come to an end until the series is over on TV.

He added that the show meant a lot to him and it’ll take a while for it to sink in that he’s fully left.

His decision to leave was made a few years ago as he felt as though his character’s arc had reached a natural end.

With his exit from the show imminent, many viewers have been speculating on who could be replacing him in the BBC drama.

Many fans have stated that Detective Sergeant Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh (played by Alison O’Donnell) would be an ideal replacement for Perez

However, others are calling for Sergeant Billy McCabe (played by Lewis Howden) to fill the DI’s place when he leaves.

The final episode featuring Jimmy Perez will air next week with fans eager to see how the detective’s role will come to an end.

A synopsis for the episode reads: “Douglas Henshall stars in the conclusion of the crime drama, based on the novels of Ann Cleeves.

“The team races to identify the killer and prevent disaster striking the town. As the investigation draws to a close, Perez faces a life-changing decision.

“Co-starring Alison O’Donnell, Steven Robertson and Julie Graham.”

Shetland continues next Wednesday on BBC One at 9pm.
