Fans have now taken to message boards to air their unhappiness with the direction of Sharon's character.

Posting on Digital Spy's forums, one fan said: "Have the producers got nothing else to give her?

"It's always about her having a realisation when one of her exes are about to get married again and having realisations even during her youth when she would sleep with both Grant and Phil, ruining another marriage or trying to be step in for ego issues and nothing else?"

"I think it's a pretty consistent character trait of Sharon's that she always wants to have her cake and eat it," said another.

Another user criticised the writers for her recent storylines.

"Quite reductive and unfair to just have her exist as a character, solely fall in and out of love with Phil," they said.

Another fan said Sharon "works best with close family and friends around".

"Not only did the writers make the mistake of killing off Denny, the made the double-mistake of axing Jada and his child. Sharon works best with close family and friends around but sadly (because of two more questionable storylines), that boat has sailed for Ian and Michelle," the posted.

With Alfie Moon now back in Walford, it remains to be scene whether or not Phil and Kat's wedding will go ahead smoothly.

EastEnders airs on BBC One and iPlayer.
