EastEnders fans baffled by Dot house ‘blunder’ as some point out pricey fact

EastEnders fans were left scratching their heads after Dot Cotton's house appeared to be valued at £1million.

The Walford legend passed away off-screen in December, after actress June Brown died in April at the age of 95.

Her house was inherited by Sonia (Natalie Cassidy), who recently revealed that she had to fork over a whopping £196,000 in inheritance tax.

However, some viewers thought soap bosses might have slipped up, saying that a tax bill of that size suggested the house was worth big bucks.

"How can it be such a high inheritance tax… That house ain't worth £1million it's a dump," one fan tweeted.

Another posted: "Sonia on EastEnders has apparently inherited an unencumbered house and has to pay inheritance tax if £196k on it…. It would be worth £1m+ so get a mortgage or sell it love.

"Sorry if my heart doesn't bleed for you!!"

Somebody else claimed: "Inheritance tax is £10,000 for each £100,000.

"So that makes Dot's house worth nearly £2million.

"How many unlikely millionaires own their own house on the Square? Obviously I'm no accountant and I could be mistaken…"

"£196k – that’s got to be nearly what that house is worth?!" said another confused viewer.

However, others pointed out that the house is in London, where house prices are high.

For example, according to Rightmove, homes near where Walford is meant to be based sold for an average of £910,000 in 2022.

And some viewers were just worried about how Sonia was going to find the money.

"Where is Sonia going to find the £192k to pay the inheritance tax on Dot’s house I wonder — maybe Reiss will turn out to be rich and help?

"What happened to the millions Dot inherited from Dr Legg?"
