In November, millions tuned in as the eagerly awaited fifth season of The Crown landed on Netflix. While many looked forward to seeing Elizabeth Debicki’s portrayal of Princess Diana, the actress disclosed she had auditioned for a different role.

The Crown has been a major hit since it first premiered in 2016 as a historical drama, it told the story of Queen Elizabeth’s reign.

However, unlike any other, season five was highly discussed and was seen as controversial as it would depict what was known as the Queen’s “most turbulent” decade.

During the 90s, the British public began to question the role of the Royal Family, there were two front-page divorces which took place.

This included the highly publicised break-up between Prince Charles (played by Dominic West) and Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki).

Prince Andrew (James Murray) and Sarah Ferguson (Emma Laird) had also parted ways during the 90s

Despite this, it was the introduction of Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams) that made the former divorce particularly controversial.

Though Princess Diana was first introduced in season four, Elizabeth Debicki succeeded the role from Emma Corrin, to portray the royal later in her life.

However, Elizabeth recently revealed she had initially auditioned for a different role to appear in a “little cameo part” during season two.

She shared: “I definitely wanted to do something on The Crown because my dear friend Vanessa Kirby was playing Princess Margaret and I was just obsessed with the show.

“I was one of those people who binged it,” Elizabeth admitted.

Following her audition, she was told there was an interest in her potentially playing Princess Diana later on.

However, the actress confessed: “This was so many years ago that I sort of put it on the shelf.”

“I didn’t put any eggs in the basket, well, maybe there was one egg in the basket, then years later, it came back around.

“When Peter [Morgan] actually asked me, I didn’t have to give it much thought,” Elizabeth told Entertainment Weekly.

With Elizabeth stepping into the role of Princess Diana, fans were also introduced to Prince William (Rufus Kampa) and Prince Harry (Will Powell).

Despite the excitement surrounding season five, it was also met with heaps of controversy from Historians and those who worked closely with the Royal Family.

Season five included a new storyline surrounding  Prince Phillip’s (Jonathan Pryce) close friendship with Penny Knatchbull (Natascha McElhone).

Throughout the years, Penny was dubbed the “keeper of secrets” for Prince Philip, which alluded to their close friendship, however many speculated the Prince was unfaithful.

This was met with major criticism from the Queen’s former press secretary Dickie Arbiter.

Ahead of its release, he told The Sun: “Coming just weeks after the nation laid Her Majesty to rest next to Prince Philip, this is very distasteful and, quite frankly, cruel rubbish.

“The truth is that Penny was a longtime friend of the whole family. Netflix is not interested in people’s feelings.”
