The hit ITV soap is marking half a century on screen with a “huge stunt,” the actress revealed as she chatted to chef James Martin on James Martin’s Saturday Morning. Throughout October, Emmerdale can expect plenty of explosive twists and turns, with seemingly anything possible in the village. Olivia teased what would be coming as she detailed plans for the big event.

The actress appeared as a guest on James Martin’s show, sampling some of his cooking and chatting about her career on the ITV weekend staple.

“So tell me, I mean, 50 years celebrating Emmerdale,” the chef remarked.

“That is some milestone for any programme. We have been doing Saturday Morning for 16 years.

“And you mentioned the fact that when you started you’re only supposed to be 12 weeks – I was only supposed to be doing this for six weeks. That’s it.

“We’ve both just gone on and on and on and on and on.”

Cooking up a tasty dish, he continued: “But doing stuff like that. I mean, the whole cast must get behind it, but 50 years!

“The storyline on this one must be incredible.” While she couldn’t give too much away, Olivia confirmed there would be plenty to come.

“Yeah, I mean, every October usually we have this thing called super soak week, which is like a big stunt week,” she replied.

“I think all the soaps have them and it is like a kind of a competition for who can be the most dramatic and stuff.

“But this year, obviously you’ve got the 50th, so it’s massive and it’s very soapy and very dramatic, and we’ve got some crazy stunts, and it’s been really fun.”

“But you know, this is your first acting job really, and really that’s the thing, you know.

“How do you find that? Because I’ve been chatting with Adam Woodyatt at all these festivals and I was chatting to him and said, ‘You know, do you get frightened to get typecast?’

“But I guess yeah, there’s a fine line between having a regular job and being in a successful show, really?”

“Exactly,” Olivia replied. “I think it’s because it moves so fast.

“And I mean, often we’re doing like nine or 10 scenes a day and have very big storylines, we can be doing wild, crazy things you know, a murder in one day and you can have an affair the next day or whatever.

“So we’re being tested quite a lot. But for me, it’s been really good training just in terms of cameras and the technicality of television work and stuff. So it’s a really, really good, fast experience.”

James also talked about the actress’ upbringing, which couldn’t be further from the Emmerdale village.

“Emmerdale’s a far cry from where you were brought up abroad as a young kid,” the chef commented.

“Japan, yeah,” she replied. “Well, I was there until I was three and they were there for 10 years.

“So my dad was working in tennis. He was a tennis coach and my mum was working at a university there.

“So yeah, I suppose I used to blabber away in Japanese, it was my first kind of language really, which is weird.”

Emmerdale continues on Monday at 7.30pm on ITV.
