Emmerdales Chloe faces every parents worst nightmare as newborn son falls gravely ill

Emmerdale’s resident new mum Chloe Harris experienced every parent's worst nightmare on Thursday when her newborn baby Reuben was rushed to hospital in heart-breaking scenes.

The young mum welcomed her son just two weeks ago, and had been struggling to take care of him alone in recent weeks, while his dad Mackenzie Boyd was out of the picture.

Initially, Reuben had appeared a little unwell so concerned Chloe had called the GP for advice, but after being seen by doctor Liam Cavanagh, the little one was rushed to hospital where he was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.

As her young son was rushed away for urgent treatment in intensive care, Chloe sobbed to her housemate Victoria, “I can't lose him, Vic.”

"He's all that I've got… I would have given everything for them to walk in and say it's nothing, and I've overreacted. I feel so powerless. I'm his mum and he needs me, and I can't do anything.”

As medics worked to try and stabilise his condition, Chloe was told how Reuben needed to be placed on a ventilator for 72 hours to help him breathe while he battled the infection.

As Chloe struggled to come to terms with the news, the information slowly filtered back to the village and secret dad Mack, who was heartbroken to learn how ill his son actually was.

Concerned for his wellbeing, Mack snuck into the hospital to check up on the little one, but was soon escorted away by a nurse, after he denied being the youngster’s father when directly questioned.

Informed that it was for family only and he wasn’t on the list, a devastated Mackenzie was forced to leave his son as Chloe spent the night at the hospital worried sick about her little one.

Fans at home were immediately heartbroken by the scenes, as they rushed to social media to share their thoughts.

“15 years ago minus 9 days, my new born was put on a ventilator, struggling to breath. He didn’t have meningitis but diagnosed with congenital pneumonia, whereby both his lungs collapsed during child birth. There is nothing more traumatic than seeing your baby so ill,” wrote one fan who had experienced a similar situation themselves.

Another fan commented: “Poor Chloe, no new mother should go through this alone.”

Before a third added: “Heartbroken for Chloe”, with a fourth viewer also echoing similar sentiments as they wrote: “Feel so sorry for Chloe dealing with a very poorly child on her own. And having that secret hanging over her too. Must be hard.
