Emmerdales star admitted it was a lot as she struggled with childrens health

Emmerdale's Laura Norton opens up about her children

Laura Norton, who plays Kerry Wyatt in Emmerdale, and her partner Mark Jordan admitted “it was a lot to drink in” as they came to terms with their children’s condition on Steph’s Packed Lunch.

Speaking on Wednesday’s show about their children having Usher Syndrome, Laura explained: “You’re living in joy and you are trying to make every day joyful again, and I also got pregnant again, which we weren’t expecting.

“But when I was pregnant I got the news about Jesse and we’ve said quite a few times, you normally just have the baby and go, ‘Oh my God, the pregnancy went fine and the baby is here.’

“To find out later that something’s come up which was the hearing loss first was one thing that we had to deal with and accept.

“But obviously, it was a year later we finally got the results of the genetic testing to find out it was connected to something much bigger and he was going to lose his vision as well – it was quite difficult at the time.”

She said she started questioning how her second child Ronnie’s health would be as well following Jesse’s diagnosis.

Laura turned to her partner and admitted: “It was a lot to drink in, wasn’t there?”

He replied: “Yeah, there was a lot to learn because nobody, none of our family or friends knew what it was.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Laura opened up about “doing as much as we can” to give their children the best lives possible.

“One of the things about finding out [about their condition] early is we have the luxury of time,” Laura told Steph McGovern.

“It’s not imminent, the vision loss and Mark had this beautiful idea that we would start writing a letter after we decided to go public with it so they will understand why we did it and hopefully one day thank us for it.

“We are madly passionate about getting awareness out there so we can get people talking about it so it becomes something which is normal.”

Mark and Laura said they had no idea they were both carriers of Usher Syndrome and they are trying to spread awareness by working on a project they’re calling Cure Usher Charity Ball.

The couple first went public about their children’s condition in February of this year, and while there is no cure, there are treatments to help manage vision and hearing problems.

Steph’s Packed Lunch airs on weekdays from midday on Channel 4.
