First ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ Trailer Unleashes Double Dose of Evilness

The return of two girls, who mysteriously disappeared in the woods, unleashes a chain of demonic activities that can only be stopped with the help of Chris MacNeil from the original film.

AceShowbiz -Universal Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for “The Exorcist: Believer“, unleashing double dose of evilness. Serving as a direct sequel to “The Exorcist” (1973), the new installment in the supernatural horror film franchise begins with the disappearance of two girls in the woods.

Angela (Lidya Jewett) and friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum) sent their parents into panic as they are presumed to be kidnapped. They return three days later seemingly possessed by demonic entities. Desperate to get his daughter back, Angela’s father Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.) turns to Chris MacNeil, who has witnessed possession when her daughter Regan got possessed years ago, to perform exorcism.

According to the official synopsis, “since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding has raised their daughter, Angela on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine, disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.”

The film brings back Ellen Burstyn as MacNeil, an actress who has been forever altered by what happened to her daughter Regan (Linda Blair) five decades before. She portrayed the character in the original film (1973), but she did not return in the 1977 sequel “Exorcist II: The Heretic” nor in another of the franchise’s subsequent entries until now.

David Gordon Green, who directed the recent “Halloween” trilogy, serves at the helm for the new “Exorcist” film. “The concept of this movie is two young girls disappear after school one day. When they return, they are in a different mental state and exhibiting some peculiar attributes,” he explains to Entertainment Weekly. “We come to learn that they are in a synchronized possession.”

Green describes Odom Jr.’s character as someone who “puts all of his energy and love into his daughter. Then [he is] faced as a single father with this issue and [does] not have a strong spiritual community or connection to his physical community.”

As to what MacNeil has been up to since the events in the original film, Green shares, “Her character ended up becoming fascinated by exorcism and studying the rites and rituals of possession throughout culture. [She] became a bit of an expert. Not an exorcist herself, but renowned for the books that she’s written.”

Green doesn’t say if Blair will appear in “The Exorcist: Believer” or the subsequent films, but he reveals that the film “alludes to her character in a number of ways.” He also says that the actress has had some involvement in the upcoming movie.

“We were lucky and had Linda as a technical advisor,” Green says. “She helped us bring excellent performances out of young actresses. It was really valuable having a relationship with her and being able to get her as a part of this conversation.”

“The Exorcist: Believer” is written by Green and Peter Sattler. Jennifer Nettles and Norbert Leo Butz portays Katherine’s parents, with Ann Dowd also starring. The film is produced by Blumhouse and Morgan Creek and is distributed by Universal.

“The Exorcist: Believer” will be released in theaters on October 13 This is the first in a planned three-film continuation of the “Exorcist” franchise. On Tuesday, July 25, Universal announced the follow-up film, “The Exorcist: Deceiver“, will arrive on April 18, 2025.
