Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is currently being shown to select groups of fans and critics at the Cannes Film Festival for the first time.

The fifth Indiana Jones picture will mark the final adventure of Harrison Ford’s titular archaeologist and will bring the star’s 40+ year journey as the hero to a resounding end.

And it seems as if the departure is already getting a little too much for the 80-year-old actor.

After The Dial of Destiny was aired in Cannes, the cast and crew were given a powerful six-minute standing ovation.

Footage showed the film’s star Phoebe Waller-Bridge applauding Ford, who was reduced to tears by the no doubt overwhelming feeling of having his lifelong role appreciated for one final time.

The footage also showed Ford’s wife, Calista Flockhart, clapping in support behind him as he emotionally blew kisses to the crowd.

Before the film was shown to Cannes audiences, Ford struggled to hold it together as he introduced it for the first time.

According to Sky, he said: “They say when you’re about to die you see your life flash before your eyes. And I just saw my life flash before my eyes. A great part of my life but not all of my life. My life has been enabled by my lovely wife, supporting my passion and my dreams and I’m grateful.”

Ford went on to praise the audience, thanking them for the endless support he has received over the past five films.

“And I love you too,” he gestured to the crowd. “You’ve given my life purpose and meaning and I’m grateful for that. So grateful to have the opportunity to work with others like Phoebe [Waller-Bridge] and Mads [Mikkelsen].”

With a smile, he added: “I am deeply moved by this honour, and humbled – but I got a movie you gotta see. So let me get out of the way.”

After The Dial of Destiny hits cinemas, the future of Indiana Jones is completely uncertain.

It has long been rumoured that Indy’s goddaughter, Helena Shaw (played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge) could take up the mantle of the archaeologist, but Ford himself believes otherwise.

Speaking about the end of Indiana Jones a few years ago, he told NBC: “Don’t you get it? I’m Indiana Jones. When I’m gone, he’s gone. It’s easy.”

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny hits cinemas on June 28.
