Stephen gets closer to killing Elaine in Corrie

While Elaine Jones (Paula Wilcox) remains completely head over heels in love with Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) in Coronation Street, we know the evil businessman is only with her for the money.

Stephen’s desperate attempt to put cash back into his bank account has resulted in the death of Leo, Teddy and Rufus, who all got too close to the truth and lost their lives afterwards.

Running Underworld and earning money the normal way clearly isn’t enough for Stephen, as next week we discover that the life insurance company has emailed him with confirmation of his first payment.

Of course, with them being a couple, this means that if Elaine dies, Stephen will get himself a substantial amount of money as her next of kin.

That aside, Stephen also suggests to Elaine that they should re-mortgage Redbank in order to buy Carla’s (Alison King) share of Underworld after she announces her plans to leave as a co-owner, but will Elaine agree?

If she doesn’t, will this desperation be enough to tip Stephen over the edge and murder his partner?

After Elaine’s history with Geoff, we know Tim (Joe Duttine) is extremely suspicious of Stephen and is convinced that he’s only with his mum for the money, so could he be the one to catch him out?

Or will Stephen get what he wants and ultimately come out on top?

‘It’s wonderful when the public knows something the characters don’t,’ Paula Wilcox said recently, discussing this storyline.

‘I love the dramatic irony. People are always saying to me that I need to stay away from Stephen, but I just say “oh no you’re wrong he is lovely,” I go along with it because Elaine has no idea about what they know about him.’

‘It has to be said Stephen is a very good actor. He can even turn the tears on and makes himself seem very vulnerable.

‘And I think that makes him seem like a little boy lost sometimes. Women want to take care of him and I think despite Elaine’s experience with controlling men she doesn’t see that she is under his spell.’
