Here is when Emmerdale's 50th anniversary special is
It’s a big week for Emmerdale as the soap is proudly marking 50 years.
The soap has been full of gripping storylines that will come to ahead on the five decade anniversary.
In true Emmerdale style, the milestone will be marked by a deadly storm that is set to bring death and destruction galore.
But when is the unmissable 50th anniversary special episode, and what can fans look forward to?
Here is everything you need to know.
When is the Emmerdale 50th anniversary special?
The 50th anniversary special edition of Emmerdale will air at 7pm on Sunday, October 16.
You can catch the hour-long episode on ITV and the ITV Hub.
The move from the usual mid-week slot is to coincide with the soap’s actual 50th anniversary – as it first aired on October 16, 1972.
Unlike the show’s 40th anniversary special in 2012, this episode won’t be live.
Emmerdale boss Jane Hudson explained: ‘We know one of the things our viewers love is that stunts we pull out of the bag.
‘You can’t do those things in a live. Another big factor is covid.
‘If we suddenly have people test positive the day of the live, for example, we go “Jeff is now not available for that big story” I’m not sure what we’d do.’
The week following the anniversary episode will document the explosive fallout from the special.

What can you expect from the 50th anniversary special?
Producer Jane Hudson has also revealed that her team plan to take viewers back to where it all began in the early 1970s.
‘It’s interesting because when I watched the hour episode for the first time I thought this is like the journey of Emmerdale,’ Jane told press.
‘We start very purposefully paying homage the very first episode where you see a hand going across the meadow, you see somebody on horseback, you see people in farms, you see the graveyard with Jacob Sugden’s grave.
‘And then we get into the emotional relationships, the families and progress to a big event, a wedding.
‘And then we get to the crash, bang, wallop stunt, everything’s thrown at it, all the technology, it’s all there. So it really is kind of Emmerdale’s journey in an hour.’
And we hope you have your tissues ready, as fans can expect emotional returns from old characters such as Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller), Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh) and Diane Sugden (Elizabeth Estensen).
Fans can also expect an eventful buildup to the wedding of Kim Tate (Claire King) and Will Taylor (Dean Andrews), plus Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler) continues her grudge against Naomi Walters (Karene Peter) over her attack.
When is the Emmerdale 50 year documentary?
As well as a stunt-heavy special episode focused on the major storm ITV will also air a one-off documentary on Sunday, October 16, at 6p.
The special looks at how a sleepy daytime afternoon serial became the award-winning, hard-hitting drama that we know and love today.
Expect interviews with past and present cast members, unseen clips, and highlights from the past 50 years.
