Helen McCrory voiced the character of Lord Asriel’s (played by James McAvoy) daemon, Stelmaria, in the first two series of His Dark Materials. Following her death at the age of 52 in April 2021, she was replaced in the role.

His Dark Materials fans will realise a change in voice for Stelmaria when the series aired on BBC One.

Victoria Hamilton stepped in to provide the voice of the daemon in place of Helen.

Helen died in April 2021 of cancer and the BBC series wanted to pay tribute to her career.

In a simple but heartbreaking fashion, they remembered Helen with a title card at the end of the first episode.

It read: “In Memory Of Helen McCrory, OBE.”

Following Helen’s death, His Dark Materials shared their loss on Twitter, writing: “We are heartbroken to report that the uniquely talented, #HelenMcCrory, who voiced Lord Asriel’s daemon Stelmaria, has passed to another world after battling cancer.

“We have lost one of the finest actors of our generation.

“Our thoughts are with her family and friends.”

Stelmaria will take on more of a role in the third series as Lord Asriel makes his return.

Ahead of the final series, Will Parry star Amir Wilson opened up about what viewers can expect.

He explained the final episode will be “heavy” as those around Lyra (Dafne Keen) fight for survival and to bring down the Authority.

Amir added it’s an “emotional rollercoaster” and expected there to be “lists of tears”.

The actor told Digital Spy: “There certainly was on my part and Dafne’s part when we were filming it.

“I think it’s a beautiful, beautiful episode. A really, really beautiful episode. And I think people are going to like it.”

The synopsis for the first episode titled The Enchanted Sleeper, reads: “Held captive in the hands of Mrs Coulter, a dreaming Lyra finds herself in a mysterious place with someone familiar – Roger.

“ Will continues with his quest to find Lyra, meeting unexpected allies along the way.

“Asriel journeys through the worlds in his recruitment drive for his war against the Authority.

“In Geneva, ‘Father President’ MacPhail meets a devoted young priest, Father Gomez, and sends him on a special mission.”

His Dark Materials series 1-3 are available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
