Home and Away Andrew star opens up on soap role despite being ‘too shy’ to act

Home and Away's Joshua Hewson has reflected on landing his dream role after being deemed "too shy" to act as a child.

The actor made his first appearance as the mysterious Andrew on Monday (June 19) when he was discovered semi-unconscious by Justin Morgan (James Stewart).

Opening up on his overnight fame following his humble Perth upbringing, Joshua said: "It’s a dream come true, technically. Where I am from, it’s a shock.

“I still can’t believe it to this day. When I see myself on TV I get lost. I didn’t see myself where I am now when I was little. I was too shy to be an actor."

Despite not being able to see the talent within himself, that was changed by a teacher and an agent.

After just one audition, Joshua landed the part of Andrew on the Channel 5 soap.

He added: “I thought other people would have thought bad of me. It was all my friends and family, they’d all say ‘you remind me of Jim Carrey off The Mask’.

"They said ‘you should be an actor’. I went to a school in Midland. A teacher saw my skill set and said ‘you should do acting’.”

Opening up on his future plans, the Perth-born star revealed he is eyeing up Hollywood as that's always been his dream.

“It would be my dream to go to Hollywood,” he explained. “I am trying to hit that as soon as possible.

"That’s always been my No.1. Hit America straight away and the Hollywood movies. I have never left Oceania. New Zealand, that’s it!"

Following his arrival, Andrew was taken to hospital where he refused to answer questions and flinched at medical treatment.

Only responding to Justin, Andrew revealed he didn't know his own birthday and claimed he wasn't allowed outside.

The psychologist’s assessment of Andrew only created more questions than answers when it was revealed the teen is deemed to have the social and emotional skills of a 9-year-old.

When Bree told Justin she couldn't keep Andrew at the hospital any longer, Justin made an impulsive decision and said Andrew could stay with him and Leah Patterson (Ada Nicodemou).

But fans have been left wondering if letting the troubled teenager into their home could've been a huge mistake.
