Hostage horror confirmed for Claudette in Emmerdale amid Victor’s crime spree

Little by little Emmerdale viewers have been discovering more about the troubled past of Charles Anderson (Kevin Mathurin)’s family, which all hinges around the criminal activities of Charles’s father Victor (Eddie Osei).

In Tuesday (July 25)’s episode we were given the clearest picture yet of the kind of danger Victor put Claudette (Flo Wilson) and Charles in, and it was an absolutely harrowing story.

Charles hadn’t planned on talking about it, but when he saw Claudette apparently being drawn back in by Victor’s flirtatious, friendly manner he was horrified. Making an excuse, he left the house.

Later Manpreet (Rebecca Sarker) questioned him about why he reacted so oddly. Charles has previously talked about how Victor’s criminal activities had meant that he and his mum could never relax and always had to be on their guard. Victor had been in and out of prison the whole time, but life when he was at home was chaotic and disturbing.

Now he told Manpreet about a specific incident that had impacted him and Claudette for years.

When he was 12 years old a vicious group of men came looking for Victor, who wasn’t in the house at the time. They smashed their way into the house and tied Claudette up, and let Charles go so he could look for Victor.

Charles described a frantic search round all the local pubs looking for his father, all the while horrified about what the men might be doing to Claudette.

He said Claudette never spoke about what she experienced during the incident but whatever it was traumatised her and she was unable to leave the house for many weeks because she was so badly affected. Charles stayed home from school for months to take care of her and to try to protect her even though he was only 12, until the truant officer came and he had to go back to school.

This, Charles explained to Manpreet, was why he felt such a need to protect Claudette from Victor and his influence.

‘She can’t see him for who he is,’ he insisted. ‘Just a fantasy in her mind. ‘I can’t trust her not to hurt herself, to hurt me by letting him in.’

Fearing it might already be too late to stop Victor’s influence he warned, ‘It’s starting all over again.’

Victor, of course, insists he’s changed and 25 years in prison has given him time to think about his actions. He also says he has a brain aneurysm and won’t live much longer. As far as Claudette is concerned, her husband deserves another chance.

But is Charles right? Could Victor be about to bring huge danger to the family?
