I quit Married at First Sight – secrets producers don't want you to know including bizarre way dinner parties are filmed | The Sun

DINNER parties are a perfect way to bring close friends together for an evening of fun – except for if you're on Married At First Sight.

So far in this year's MAFS UK, we've seen tears, arguments and a scandal over who spread salacious gossip.

Now former star Lara Eyre, 50, lifts the lid on the sneaky way some of that drama is engineered to ensure a fiery and foul-mouthed feast.

The waitress was partnered with guitarist Richie Dews on the hit E4 dating show, but last week claimed he was "fake" and only interested in fame in a scathing interview with The Sun.

She tells The Sun about the unusual way couples are brought into dinner parties, how long commitment ceremonies really last and the way scenes are sneakily edited to make 'storylines'.

Unusual dinner party entrances

On TV it appears that the couples go to the dinner parties when they are ready but Lara reveals that's not the case.

She said: “Oh my god, it’s all day. We are ready for hair and make-up by 9am and then are filmed getting into the cars and taken to the venue.

“All of the couples are put in our own separate rooms and wait to be told when we can go into the dinner party. They bring in a new couple every hour.

“You’re very on edge and I was nearly always in last, which is weird because you could hear everyone laughing and drinking through the walls.”

During those lengthy waits, Lara admits she tried to convince producers to bring her some alcohol.

She said: “You come in completely sober and everyone has been drinking for ages. I remember once begging the crew to find me a drink but they didn’t.

“Often I was sitting there forever, thinking ‘Jesus, there better be some beer left by the time I get in.’"

Lara felt the one perk of going in later was that she “was in control” and didn’t regret her actions – but that wasn't always the case.

“Then the next morning you wake up and think ‘S***! What the f*** did I say or tell that person’. There are no private moments except in the toilets," she added.

Initially, the cast are excited to blow off steam and share relationship problems at dinner parties – however, that soon changes.

Lara said: “At first it was great because we could get dressed up and see everyone but it was like emotional warfare, by the end everyone dreaded going to them.

“There’s always drama or beef with someone, the honesty box is mean and everyone is a bit drunk, crying and getting very emotional.”

In Lara and Richie’s final dinner party they arrived in separate taxis after a row, which she claims was not their decision but the producers.

She explained: “He had moved out by that point and we hadn’t spoken, so they kept us separate and took us in different cars.

“They didn’t want us to talk about what happened off-camera… and because I came in last, I didn’t get a chance to put my side of the story across.”

Commitment ceremony edits

While the commitment ceremonies take up only a small snippet of the show, they last the whole day according to Lara.

“They are really annoying filming days because you have to be there for 9.30am in the morning and leave at around midnight,” she said.

“Each couple has at least an hour on the couch with the experts but it gets cut down a lot.”

She says this creates some space for miscommunication after the clips have been edited.

“They can’t make you say something you don’t want to," Lara said.

"But they can cut out massive chunks from the start of a sentence and edit out the important bits.

“In our commitment ceremony, it looked like I was telling Richie he was too much for me for the first time but in reality, I said it a lot.

“In the clip where he says, ‘This is the first I’ve heard of it’ – that was in response to me apologising to him for something else."

Secret off-camera parties

The producers try to prevent couples from socialising off-camera because it means potentially important scenes are missed.

However, that doesn’t stop the cast from hosting sneaky gatherings, which Lara compares to 'Spring Break'.

“They try to discourage people from going into each other's rooms but it’s hard to police a bunch of adults who are sneaking up or down the corridors,” Lara said.

Notably, one of those parties caused trouble after it emerged that someone was "b****ing" about Chanita – and so far the finger has been pointed at Thomas, April and Jess.

Lara said: “With the April and Thomas thing, who knows who said what. I don’t think we will ever know the truth. Even at the reunion it was still being spoken about.

“In the normal world you have jobs and a normal life but on the show these people are your world so everything is heightened.

“It ends up being like secondary school where everyone is gossiping, chatting about each other and falling out."

‘Felt like joke couple’

While things didn’t pan out for Lara, she admits one the lowest point of the experience was actually the honeymoon.

“We were sent to Germany, which is a great place but it’s not somewhere I would think of with romance," she said.

"We should have been walking on the beach, lying by the pool and having drinks. Instead, we were in the cold. I hate the cold, that's why I left Canada.

“It was freezing, there was nowhere to go and it was very intense because we couldn’t leave each other to get some space.

“It made me feel like we were the ‘joke couple’. I was set up to look like a b**** on that holiday and like I was being s***ty to Richie the whole time.

“Other couples got coconut drinks and champagne, whereas we got three apples. I felt cheated. Even when I watched it on TV, I was saying, ‘F*** this, f*** that’ under my breath.”

Despite the ups and downs, Lara says she’s glad to have been a part of the experiment.

She added: “I loved every minute, even on the bad days when we were stuck in a s****y hotel. I had Deliveroo sushi on tap so I was living my best life.”
