Eamonn Holmes and Isabel Webster invited former Tory MP David Mellor and broadcaster Clare Muldoon to discuss Wednesday’s headlines on GB News. David branded King Charles III’s plans to make staff redundancies “crude” as he pointed out these were people who would have “served him loyally”.

Eamonn asked: “What will happen to staff who worked for the Queen or indeed the new King?”

David replied: “We have to remember that courtiers who surround the Royal Family have been responsible for an awful lot of bad publicity over the years for the royals.

“And what they have done, and when you think the Queen isn’t even buried yet, the man who’s going to be running [King] Charles’ life, Clive Alderton, has issued redundancy notices to 100 of Charles’ staff.

“On one side, does Charles really need 100 staff? But these are people who would have served him extremely loyally.

“For them to be given a redundancy notice at this stage, they all assumed they would be absorbed somewhere but it just sends out the wrong vibes.”

“I just think it’s crude and clumsy and there were plenty of people who had been in the royal service who say, ‘You do it but don’t expect any thanks at the end,’” he added.

“It’s like wine tasting, roll them around and spit them out.”
