Many fans of Law and Order SVU have longed for Elliot Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni) and Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) to take their friendship a step further. However, despite this others have spotted a major reason why the detectives shouldn’t leap into romance.

Stabler and Benson first appeared on screens as workplace partners when Law and Order SVU first premiered in 1999.

After spending hours together cracking down on touch cases in the special victims unit, the two became close friends.

Although they often shared flirty banter, they could never cross boundaries and become intimate because Stabler was a married father.

While season 13 brought his abrupt resignation, Stabler reunited with Benson in 2021 which was when she learned he had become a widow.

Despite his heartbreak, some fans welcomed the news of Kathy Stabler’s (Isabel Gilles) death as Benson hadn’t settled down and this meant the two could get finally together.

However, other viewers were troubled by the thought of their potential romance and unveiled reasons why they wouldn’t work.

Taking to a Law and Order SVU fan page, Redditor Arkady2009 shared: “Olivia never had a chance to grow with Elliot around.

“When he left she got a promotion to Sergeant, then a second promotion to Lieutenant, and a third to Captain.”

They continued: “Elliot has never been promoted. He left as a Detective, and he’s still a Detective.

“He’s never climbed the ranks and there’s a reason for that – he’s too much of a hothead.

“Olivia deserves better than someone who constantly loses his temper and never allowed her to grow the whole time they worked together.”

However, user BurnerSev310 disagreed: “Olivia choosing to be with him now doesn’t erase her growth as a character or her career growth. Also – who cares that he wasn’t promoted? Why is that the reason they can’t be together?”

Elsewhere, Redditor 5-9_hack stated: “Elliot makes Olivia irrational, she excuses unethical behaviour for him, he makes her a worse police officer.

“For example, when he comes back and his wife is murdered she lets Elliot interview the suspect

“And of course, Elliot tries to beat him up which everyone saw coming except for Olivia because being around Elliot makes her stupid and unethical.

“I prefer when the police act in an ethical manner, I know not every fan feels that way but some of us do,” the user added.

When Stabler initially resigned, he left without saying goodbye to Benson which left her heartbroken and questioning their entire friendship.

Actress, Mariska had previously addressed rumours of her character and Stabler getting together and stated: “Olivia Benson is hurt, he left me in the lurch for ten years. She’s frightened.

“And I think we are slowly finding our way back to it,” she confirmed on the Drew Barrymore Show.

“I want to give him the amount of time he needs to grieve Kathy Stabler.”

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit season 24 continues Sundays on NBC in the USA. A UK release date has yet to be announced.
