Josie Gibson was forced to take the reins on This Morning as Holly Willoughby choked back tears as she delivered an emotional statement following Phillip Schofield's scandal.

The 42-year-old presenter has been away from the ITV daytime show for a couple of weeks due to an early holiday, but on Monday (June 5) she returned to the famous blue sofa.

Holly kicked off the programme by telling viewers she was left "shaken, troubled, let down and worried" in the wake of the disgraced presenter's departure.

However, the broadcaster failed to mention the full name of her former co-host as she looked forward to the "next chapter."

She said: "You, me and all of us at This Morning gave our full of love and support to someone who was not telling the truth" and added that it is a "lot to process."

Looking ahead, Holly said: "What unites us all now is our desire to heal for the health and wellbeing of everyone."

The mum-of-three went on to thank fans for their support and says that the This Morning team will "continue to work hard."

Luckily, her colleague was there to support her as the 38-year-old held her hand throughout the statement and pulled her into a loving embrace as Holly struggled not to cry.

Fans couldn't help but share their love for the presenter online, as they begged ITV bosses to give her a permanent role on the show.

One user penned: "Well done Holly & Josie fab duo – let's see more of Josie in future!! #thismorning."
