After a 10-year break, Christopher Meloni made his big return to screens in 2021 with his own spin-off, Law and Order: Organized Crime. As his character, Elliot Stabler continues to take down criminals and the actor opened up about an embarrassing reunion with his new co-star Ann Dowd.

On Tuesday, Christopher appeared on NBC’s hit chat show, Late Night with Seth Myers where he discussed the show, as well as his personal life.

The pair also spoke about an upcoming episode which stars The Handmaid’s Tale actress, Ann Dowd.

Reflecting on their first-ever interaction, Christopher revealed the two first met when Ann starred in Law and Order SVU as Louise Durning in 2001.

Emphasizing how long ago it was, the actor told Seth: “She did an episode of SVU … back, back, back, way back, like 20 years ago.”

Christopher shared: “I was embarrassed that I didn’t know who she was because when you act with Ann Dowd you are just blown back 20 feet because she’s such a powerful, creative actor.

“I was like ‘Oh my God, who the hell is this I’ve just discovered you,’ and she’s very famous.”

He continued: “I worked with her on The Handmaid’s Tale and her character is so evil and she couldn’t be as a person more lovely.

“I bumped into her on the street and we had this big lovefest and we’re catching up, because we don’t get to see each other too much.

“This woman comes up to us, she goes ‘Oh my God, I love you so much,’ I turn around and I said ‘Thank you,’ she goes, ‘Not you, her.’”

“And I laughed at myself like ‘Me too, me too I love her more than me too,” Christopher added.

As the two burst into laughter, the humiliation struck a nerve with Seth as he stated: “That’s why I never stand beside another famous person in public, I can’t take that risk.”

“That’s why you always run away from me,” the star joked.

With fans eager to see Ann Dowd star alongside Stabler, many will be pleased to know she’s not the only Handmaid’s Tale star set to appear in the NBC franchise.

Bradley Whitford will step away from his Emmy-winning role as Commander Lawrence and appear on Law and Order SVU.

In the upcoming episode, he will guest star as a professor struggling with early-onset dementia who confesses to a murder.

The episode will air on February 26 and will be directed by series lead Mariska Hargitay.

Much like Ann Dowd, Bradley had also previously starred in the long-running crime drama.

In 2014, he was introduced as Frank Maddox during the season 15 episode, Reasonable Doubt.

During his time on The Handmaid’s Tale, Christopher Meloni starred alongside Bradley Whitford as Commander Winslow.

The two shared a scene in season three’s Witness when Winslow attended the Ceremony at Lawrence’s home alongside Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes).

Law and Order: Organized Crime season 5 continues Thursdays on NBC in the US. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
