Leonardo DiCaprio’s Accent in Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Teaser Irritates Fans
While many are excited about the new film from Scorsese which also stars Robert De Niro, DiCaprio’s fake midwestern accent is getting some major side-eye on Twitter.
AceShowbiz –Leonardo DiCaprio‘s acting isn’t always flawless. Despite his versatility that has helped him earn numerous accolades, including an Academy Award in 2016, the actor has received criticism for his accent in upcoming movie “Killers of the Flower Moon“.
DiCaprio’s accent has been scrutinized after the first teaser trailer for the film was officially released by Apple TV+ on Thursday, May 18. In the film, he plays Ernest Burkhart, the nephew of an influential local rancher (Robert De Niro), who is married to an Indigenous woman (Lily Gladstone) who has inherited an oil fortune but at deathly costs.
Throughout the nearly-two-minute video, DiCaprio’s fake midwestern accent is very prominent as he narrates the video. While many are excited about the film that reunites the 48-year-old with director Martin Scorsese, some couldn’t help raising eyebrows over his accent.
“will watch and im sure it’s great but my tolerance for leo dicaprio accent work is wearing,” someone wrote on Twitter. Another irritated user commented, “Obviously excited for this but is nobody else at least slightly bothered by Leo’s accent here? Like I can tell it’s Leo just doing an accent.”
A third can’t wait to mock DiCaprio over his fake accent, saying, “I can’t f**king wait to go around everywhere doing an impression of Leo’s fake Southern accent for the next 3 months after seeing this.” A fourth user questioned, “Did Leo just invent a new accent, has anybody ever sounded like that?”
Written by Eli Roth based on David Grann’s broadly lauded best-selling book, “Killers of the Flower Moon” is set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror.
Using Grann’s quote, DiCaprio described the film in his Instagram post. “In the 1920s, members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma were the wealthiest people per capita in the country, because oil had been discovered under their land. Then, one by one, they began to die under mysterious circumstances,” it read. “Killers of the Flower Moon tells the story of one of American history’s most sinister conspiracies and terrible racial injustices. Like the Tulsa Race Massacre, which occurred only thirty miles away during the same period, this critical chapter has long been erased from our nation’s history books. A century after these crimes, we have tried to shine a light on the true story. Killers was filmed in Oklahoma in the very places where these events took place, and several Osages whose relatives perished appeared in the film. It is an American crime story that is less about who did it than who didn’t do it. It is about widespread complicity. And ultimately, it is about a reckoning with our past that is long overdue.”
The actor also expressed his excitement about the film as he wrote in a caption of the teaser, “#KillersOfTheFlowerMoon will exclusively be in theatres from @paramountpics and @appletv this October. It’s a project I am very proud to be part of and I cannot wait to share it with you all.”
The Western crime drama also stars Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser and John Lithgow among others. It will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, May 20 and is scheduled to open wide in U.S. theaters on October 20. It will also be made available for streaming on Apple TV+ on an unspecified date.
