Love Island stars hidden signals exposed – hair style, hand gesture and food

Eagle-eyed Love Island viewers have spotted the secret signals contestants have made to their friends and family at home over the years.

It comes as no surprise that while finding love in the villa, and enjoying a sun-filled getaway in paradise, some of the islanders start to get a bit homesick.

For OG contestants that make it as far as the final, they're looking at around six to eight weeks in the villa cut off from the world with no communication with friends and family on the outside.

Daily Star has taken a look back at some of the secret signals made by stars to their family watching at home.

Ekin-Su's 'I miss you' braid

Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu reportedly styled her hair in a specific way to signal to her best friend Arabella Ovenden, that she was missing her.

Arabella told OK! Magazine that she knew was Ekin-Su was missing her and feeling homesick during her time in the Mallorcan villa last year.

"We have this sign – if she ever plaits her hair that means that she misses me. She did it almost straight away," she said in June, shortly after Ekin-Su rocked into the villa as a bombshell, causing a stir among the original girls.

Arabella continued: "It made me feel bad, girls can be very bitchy and it just didn't seem like they were taking to her. It seems fine now that she’s come out of her shell. She won’t let people mess her about, she's very genuine."

Davide's tasty meal

Ekin-Su's partner Davide Sanclimenti, who she went on the win the series with, had his own way of letting his pals know that they were missed, and it's not as unlikely for the Italian stallion as you'd expect.

When he was dumped from the villa, Jay Younger revealed that he and Davide had made up their own secret message to the outside world that viewers appeared to have missed.

He tweeted: "No one knows this, but I told Davide to cook carbonara for everyone if he was missing me as a secret message to the outside world."

Fans couldn't get enough of the revelation and began replying to Jay's hilarious tweet, one wrote: "Truly an unbreakable bond."

Toby's unusual hand gesture

Toby Aromolaran from series seven made a sneaky hand gesture to his teammates at football club, Hashtag United in Pitsea, Essex.

Despite joining the team a year before heading into the villa, it was clear that Toby was missing the beautiful game and made their trademark celebratory hand gesture on the show.

His pals, excited to have noticed the signal, took to social media to share a screenshot of the moment he made the hashtag with his fingers.

Luca 'breaking of the fourth wall'

In 2021, Luca Bish made an unlikely gesture that made viewers at home feel slightly uneasy.

The 23-year-old fishmonger from Brighton would stare into the cameras around the villa, making it seem like he was watching viewers watching him.

Fans hilariously caught him staring at the camera while hugging ex-partner Gemma Owen, with some tweeting that he was looking back at her dad, football legend, Michael Owen, watching from home.

One wrote: “Luca checking if the cameras are rolling… just staring deep into Michael Owen's soul & bank account.”

Someone else posted: "Luca loves breaking the fourth wall and staring into the camera to contact home."
