Picard boss details filming challenges on post-credits Star Trek scene
Star Trek Picard: Prime Video releases trailer for third season
Showrunner Terry Matalas admitted the cast only had 20 minutes to film the return of Q (played by John de Lancie) in Picard’s end-credits scene.
This week’s season finale, The Last Generation, was praised by Star Trek fans for wrapping up the saga of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his Enterprise crew.
However, the episode may have also sown some more seeds for the future as Q established his interest in Picard’s son Jack (Ed Speleers).
Matalas revealed he’s “dear friends” with de Lancie, who leaped at the chance to return after his extended stint in season two.
“We only had 20 minutes to shoot the scene,” the showrunner recalled.
“So we literally got him in, got him in that amazing outfit, [and he] came in. I mean, he’s phenomenal on his worst day.
“And we just banged it out. And so, I still get chills. I love that scene so much. It’s one of my favourite scenes in the finale.”
In the final scene of the season, a younger Q pays Jack a visit and warns his trials have just begun.
While it’s currently unknown if Stewart and the rest of the Next Generation cast will be returning, Q and Jack’s meeting seems to usher in the next chapter of the ongoing Star Trek saga.
However, the last-minute addition of the iconic extra-dimensional being presented some major challenges to an already daunting undertaking in the finale.

“We literally shot it during the same scene in which Picard tells Jack he’s a Borg [in episode nine],” Matalas told Screen Rant.
“It was early, we wrapped Patrick, and we quickly changed the lighting scheme, so it’s warm.
“That’s why it’s still kind of foggy. And we went, ‘Go go go!’ because we had no time. How cool does he look in that costume?”
Hopefully, most fans won’t have noticed the scene was shot in a hurry as Jack and Q’s meeting sets up some intriguing possibilities for the future.
A major recurring character in TNG, Q has since appeared in a range of Star Trek media over the years as an omnipotent being, who can bend reality to put humanity to the test.
While he initially appeared as an antagonist for Picard and the crew, his role has evolved into more of a teacher for the Enterprise captain.
His return has now fueled rumours Picard could return beyond season three and head into the 25th Century.
After being made a Special Counselor to Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Jack could return for more adventures on the new USS Enterprise-G.
Plus, there are already new seasons of Star Trek: Discovery and Strange New Worlds to look forward to, as well as an upcoming film starring Michelle Yeoh’s Emperor Philippa Georgiou.
Star Trek: Picard is available to stream on Paramount+.
