What happened to Reynolds in Queen Charlotte?

Queen Charlotte straddles two timelines, one in 1761 where the young Queen (played by India Ria Amarteifio) is getting to know her new husband King George III (Corey Mylchreest), and the “present day” timeline in 1817 when Bridgerton is actually set.

The Queen’s right-hand man Brimsley (Hugh Sachs) is in the original Bridgerton drama with actor Sam Clemmett playing his younger self.

However, the King’s chief secretary Reynolds (Freddie Dennis) is only seen in Queen Charlotte and isn’t mentioned in the first two seasons of Bridgerton.

Netflix subscribers have enjoyed watching the Queen and King’s romance blossom as well as the unexpected relationship of Brimsley and Reynolds.

With their loyalties lying with their respected royalty, the couple’s secret love affair had been strained.

Reynolds is instructed to keep the King’s mental health issues a secret from everyone, including Brimsley who is trying to help the Queen understand why she is unable to see him.

It all comes to a head when Brimsley tells Reynolds in episode five: “You give me nothing.

“You tell me nothing but lies. I ask for your help, and you refuse to treat me like a partner or an equal.”

Once the royal couple are able to overcome their own problems, so can Brimsley and Reynolds who have a secret dance in the garden away from the rest of the partygoers.

But in the finale’s final moments, an older Brimsley is shown dancing alone, indicating that their relationship wasn’t to last.

Sachs, the actor behind the older Brimsley, told Vulture there was another scene involving the couple that wasn’t filmed, explaining Reynolds’ whereabouts.

He said: “There was a scene that we didn’t film because it was cut, where I was going to meet the older Reynolds.

“He was the love of his life, and for whatever reason, they could not stay together.

“So when they would pass each other in the passageway in the deleted scene, it wasn’t a toxic moment.

“Because of the world they inhabited, it was still a hangable offense to be gay, and it was just not possible.”

Brimsley’s lonely lifestyle is briefly addressed by the Queen herself in the last episode.

She asks him if he has ever been married, to which he sadly tells her there hasn’t been anyone for him.

“No, your majesty, who could I ever find who would be free to spend a lifetime with me?” he replies.

“I am here. Everyone here cares for the king.”

Queen Charlotte is available to watch on Netflix.
