The TV barrister was chatting to Chris about his upcoming series, Dogs in the Wild: Meet the Family. The BBC programme will document the remarkable members of a 37-strong family of wild dogs. Explaining how he felt “crushed” by the recent loss of his pet dog, Rob asked Chris to give hopeful dog owners some advice before they decide to take on a canine friend. As Chris acknowledged Rob’s loss, the 44-year-old became tearful and admitted: “You made me cry.”

The three-part series is narrated by wildlife protection advocate and dog-lover Chris, 61.
“What would your message be to anybody that was thinking about adopting a dog or buying a dog?” Rob asked the Winterwatch presenter, who was clutching his own pooch as he chatted via video link.
Appearing moved, Rob added: “I’ve just lost a dog, and I didn’t realise how crushing it would be.
“And what’s your message out there to anybody that’s thinking about it?”
“Well very quickly, Rob, if you’ve just lost a dog, I think finding the courage to take on another companion animal – it would never be a replacement, but it will give you a very welcome distraction,” Chris replied.
He went on: “And ultimately you will fall in love with that animal as well.”
Rob appeared tearful as co-host Charlotte gave him a sympathetic glance.
Chris continued: “When it comes to getting a dog generally, I think you have to think about that as carefully as you would when you might be starting a family.
“Because it will be part of your family and you want that family to be functional.
“So please think long and hard in a structured way about whether it’s the right time for you to take on a dog or a cat, any companion animal at this very difficult time.”
“Well thank you, Chris,” Rob replied. “You’ve made me cry, but there you are.”
After noticing Rob’s obvious grief, several sympathetic viewers took to Twitter to urge him to get another dog, telling him: “You’ve clearly got so much love to give.”
Earlier this month, Rob took to social media to announce the sudden death of his beloved dog, Rocco.
He revealed on Twitter on December 2: “My Rocco died suddenly yesterday.
“He blessed me with a lifetime of loyalty & limitless joy.
“I don’t speak about my private world normally. But wanted to share my profound sadness with anybody who has ever loved a dog.
“It is the deepest gift of unconditional love imaginable.”
Several stars responded to end their condolences, including Dame Arlene Phillips and Good Morning Britain co-star Susanna Reid.
Dogs In The Wild: Meet the Family will air on Wednesdays at 8pm from Wednesday on BBC One.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
