The hit drama series Step Up: High Water will be making its highly anticipated season three debut next week with Christina Milian starring as Colette Jones. The actress spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about her decision to step into the role following Naya Rivera’s death.
Step Up: High Water became a huge success after it landed online as a YouTube original.
The show was based on the hit 2006 film series and followed the lives of ambitious teenagers who enrolled in the cutthroat performing arts school.
The series also followed the faculty including its founder Sage Odom (Ne-Yo), his business partner and fiance Collete.
After a shocking finale to season two, YouTube announced they had cancelled the show which left fans heartbroken.

Thankfully Starz came to the rescue in 2020 and revealed they had picked up the series and Step Up: High Water return for a third season.
However, much like the entire film and TV industry, the pandemic brought production to a halt.
While this was devastating for fans their emotions soon turned into heartbreak after it was confirmed Naya Rivera had died in July 2020, at 33 years old.
As the show announced it would go ahead with season three, fans got the first glimpse of the instalment with Christina Milian in the trailer as Naya’s character Colette.
The acclaimed singer and actress Christina opened up about her decision to step into the role.
She shared: “It was interesting, it was a lot of fun but at the same time, knowing that it was an existing role and played by Naya, I was a big fan of hers, we related in so many ways.
“So coming into this it was a decision that yes it was such a great offer, but I’m like this is a really big commitment because it’s big shoes to fill, there are fans that are so dedicated to the storyline and to her. So what am I doing? And I had to figure it out.”
Christina continued: “I had to figure it out, I first said to myself, just trust what is happening here and why it’s come to you and it just started to make sense to me.
“And then the next layer of that was, how can I do this and become my version of her without overshadowing what’s happened before and still tell this story.
“When I got to set, when I started to live it and become Colette and be with Ne-Yo, be with Terrence (Green) and all these different characters and get more familiar with the storyline, I became more and more confident.”
She highlighted: “I think that was such an important element to Colette’s character, she’s a very confident woman too, so I didn’t want to not feel that way but it’s good.
“I think the best thing about being human is discovery and so I feel like when I’m gonna watch this art that happens along the way of episodes one through 10.”
Christina teased: “it’s gonna be really exciting, it’s going to get better and better every time everybody watches an episode.”
Season two ended on a major cliffhanger which saw Sage arrested for the murder of the death of Ernest Octavio (R. Marcos Taylor) as their eagerly awaited tour was set to begin.
With financial ruin threatening to destroy the tour and his reputation, Sage is yet to find out it was in fact Colette who pulled the trigger on Octavio.
With his fans eagerly awaiting to see his performance and the dance students preparing to impress their idol, viewers will have to tune in to see if he will be able to get out of custody in time.
