Sweet Magnolias’ Heather Headley pays tribute to ‘graceful and wise’ co-star

Sweet Magnolia’s star Heather Headley has made a huge announcement as she paid tribute to her new co-star.

Taking to Instagram she excitedly told her 160,000 followers that Janet Hubert has joined the cast of the Netflix romantic drama to play her character’s mother.

“I have a Mom!!” she opened followed by a winking eye emoji.

She then went on to gush about how “excited and honoured” she is that The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Legend was gracing the show with her presence.

Sweet Magnolias centers around three best friends Maddie (played by JoAnna García Swisher), Helen, and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) born and raised in Serenity, SC, a small southern town where everybody knows everybody and their business.

Janet, 67, played the original family matriarch Vivian Banks in the Will Smith led show from 1990 to 1993.

“The fact that I kept this secret for a year is amazing in itself,” she wrote. “I was so excited and honored that Ms. Janet Hubert would agree to join our @sweetmagnoliasnetflix cast and be my Mom…well, Helen’s Momma!!

“Beautiful. Wise. Triple threat. Graceful. Regal. In all her glory. But as it is with any queen mother…not to be messed with!”

Formally welcoming her new on screen mother she said: “Ms. Janet, Welcome to the best little town (outside of Bel Air).

“I can’t tell you how honored we all are to know that you are of #Serenity… that you are responsible for raising HELEN to be who she is.

“And that you’re the one who will lovingly snatch her back if and when a snatchback is required!”

She also made reference to the fact that Janet also played Gabrielle Union’s mother in the Perfect Find joking that they were now sisters, so she was going to raid the stars closet.

Fans of the show were thrilled with the casting news and piled into the comments to make their feelings known.

@carlaphall wrote: “That’s incredible!!!! Heeey Mama! I can’t wait to see the chemistry between the two of you.” (sic)

@Lnsaddler said: “It’s wonderful to see Ms Janet back in action. Can’t wait for this season.” (sic)

A user called @ab.k_was thrilled by the announcement. “*scream* WHAT!!! THE Vivian Banks…I cannot! I just got excited all over again. Can’t wait to see both of you interact!” she gushed. (sic)

@theelibradiva was also excited by the news. “SOooo EXCITED!!! This ‘from Serenity wanna be’ welcomes your ‘mom’!!” they commented. (sic)

Meanwhile @justb0909 simply said: “Ohhhh this is casting is *chef’s kiss*.” (sic)

Season three of Sweet Magnolias will arrive on Netflix on June 20.
