Emmerdale unveils its first Christmas story already

While the majority of us are still gearing up for the upcoming heatwave, the UK soaps are approaching Christmas mode.

Planning storylines almost a year ahead means that plans are all but nailed on for the festive stories, and Emmerdale is already teasing details of one of their stories.

In all fairness, it won’t come as a huge surprise for any fan that is decent at both maths and biology.

It’s no coincidence that this week Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley) finds out that she is 16 weeks pregnant.

That just happens to mean that a December baby is on the way, with it being a regular soap trope to feature a Christmas birth.

Addressing her joy at being handed a Christmas story, Olivia told us: ‘I was quite enthusiastic to be honest, I think it’s a really nice change of dynamic for Dawn.

As an actor, it’s going to be quite interesting because I haven’t had a baby so that’s going to be quite a challenge really to do all the things that are involved.

‘I think it will be a meaty storyline. There are a lot of twists and turns, it will be good for us as actors to play that dynamic.’

Before we ever get to those episodes, there is turbulence with Dawn’s news not exactly going down well with young Clemmie, who is scared that she will be displaced, having had a disruptive start to her young life.

Jay Kontzle, who plays dad-to-be Billy, took up the story with us.

‘Clemmie’s very shocked. Lucas obviously is a little bit more ecstatic about the idea and Clemmie is not.

Previous to finding out, she’s already in a bad place because the thoughts going through her head is that she misses her mother, and reminiscing on what she’d been through and the good times that she had.

‘The fact that she could potentially lose another mum, that’s how she responds to it, it’s the shock of, “oh you’re having a baby well, maybe I’m going to be ushered out here and I’m gonna lose another mother.”

‘So it’s a huge shock to her and it’s an impulsive reaction as well, it’s gonna be quite emotional in that sense.’

The news is revealed prematurely to the kids thanks to a ranting Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham), who blurts it out, leaving the parents furious, and a watching Kim Tate (Claire King) stunned.

Clemmie ends up going missing afterwards, meaning it’s clearly going to be a long road to try and win her round.

Jay continued: ‘It’s one thing after another, it’s hard to keep up. Billy and Dawn are broken by her going missing, it’s the self guilt.

They think it’s the way they’ve explained it and put it across and taken it for granted that she would be ok.

‘The anxiety is going to be through the roof, the repercussions, how will she respond when you get her back, will she ever come back?’

So will it be a happy Christmas or will the family tensions remain? Let’s revisit it after sweltering through the heatwave, shall we?
