AMC’s post-apocalyptic horror series The Walking Dead will make its highly anticipated return with its final ever episodes in October. Ahead of its release, showrunner Angela Kang spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk and dropped a major tease about the final ever episode.

The last time viewers ventured into the post-apocalyptic world of the Commonwealth was in April, before the instalment’s second mid-season finale.

As well as battling for survival against walkers, fans watched in horror as Lance Hornsby (played by Josh Hamilton) became a villain and started to plot against the show’s heroes.

With much anticipation about the fate of the beloved characters, many have speculated the finale’s storyline could be based on the comic book series the show was adapted from.

Thankfully for fans, showrunner Angela slipped a major tease as she spoke on the final few episodes.

She revealed: “Some of it correlates with the comics and some of it really diverges, it’s definitely true to some of the spirit of the comics.

“We had to interpret it in a different way since the show has taken so many different turns away from what the comics were.”

Angela highlighted the comic’s creator Robert Kirkman also has a major say in what has to be included in the onscreen adaptation.

She explained: “One thing that was important to him, for example, was Negan killing Alpha.

“He was like ‘I think that moment, however you get there, get there how you want but that moment is important.’”

Angel added: “I was like ‘Yep, gotcha, hear you’ because he’s a producer on the show and we respect his work.”

The Walking Dead first gained an influx of its core fan base after the graphic novels were first released in 2003.

Alongside artist Tony Moore, the pair worked together on the first 30 comic books until he was replaced by artist Charlie Adlard who took over the remainder of the series.

Robert created 193 issues until the series unexpectedly came to an end in 2019, with the exception of a few specials.

The comic books received critical acclaim and was awarded an Eisner Award in 2010 for Best Continuing Series.

With its increasing popularity, the novels were eventually picked up by AMC and adapted for TV, with The Walking Dead premiering in 2010.

Throughout its run, the show was loosely based on the comics with a few changes to certain storylines as well as characters.

Angela explained: “The main driver of things being different is the characters we have at the end are so different.

“So you know, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) is not in the show, Andrea (Lori Holden) was big in the comics has been gone a long time.

“Carol (Melissa McBride) is still alive. Daryl (Norman Reedus) never existed in the comic and he’s a lead of the show.”

The Walking Dead season 11, part 3 premieres on AMC in the USA on October 2 and the following day on Disney+’s Star in the UK.
