Netflix’s highly anticipated continuation of The Witcher franchise is almost here. The epic story of the Continent will expand with next week’s four-part prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin and, despite being set hundreds of years before the main action, showrunner Lauren Hissrich and co-creator Declan de Barra hinted the spin-off could eventually cross over with Geralt of Rivia (played by Henry Cavill) in their exclusive chat with Express.co.uk.

Lauren and Declan have hinted the characters introduced in The Witcher: Blood Origin could eventually meet up with the mainline drama.

The new prequel series arrives shortly after the creators have confirmed Henry Cavill still won’t be returning as Geralt after season three despite losing his Superman role.

Set 1200 years before the events of the main series, the epic origin story stars Michelle Yeoh as Scian, a sword-elf who leads a band of misfits on a dangerous quest.

“Yes, it’s absolutely possible,” Declan said to Express.co.uk and other press. “But it’s in the hands of Lauren.”

Blood Origin introduces several characters who are bound to become fan favourites, despite potentially appearing in just four episodes of the franchise.

Alongside Scian, up-and-comers Sophia Brown and Laurence O’Fuarain portray warriors Éile and Fjall.

British icons Lenny Henry and Minnie Driver also make appearances, while Sex Education breakout Mirren Mack portrays the villainous Merwyn.

Plus, it was recently announced that the show’s fan-favourite bard Jaskier (Joey Batey) would be making an appearance.

This has led some viewers to speculate if flash-forwards or even time travel could play a part in the series, opening the door for the new characters to make further appearances.

Lauren continued: “Uthrok (Dylan Moran), Eredin (Jacob Collins-Levy) – I love that Declan planted these characters.

“We get to see them before… they’re not even the same people they are when we meet them in The Witcher.”

Netflix’s popular series is based on a bestselling series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, which were previously adapted into a series of video games.

The showrunner confirmed Blood Origin already introduces a number of characters with whom The Witcher fans are already familiar, even if they haven’t featured in the main series just yet.

“They have 1200 years of experience, and they’re hardened by what they experience in Blood Origin,” Lauren added.

“That was really fun. And the writers’ room for The Witcher has also fallen in love with these characters.

“There are definitely ones that we have been thinking, ‘How could we possibly bring this person back?’”

And Declan teased: “If you’re not dead in Blood Origin, then you could be alive anywhere else.”

Other cast members such as Francesca Mills and Huw Novelli also confirmed they’d be willing to return, though only time will tell which direction The Witcher will take in season three.

Season four has thankfully already been confirmed but with Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth taking over as Geralt following Henry’s departure.

The Witcher: Blood Origin will be released on December 25, Christmas Day, on Netflix.
