Gyles Brandreth was invited onto Monday’s instalment of This Morning to discuss the latest headlines with hosts Josie Gibson and Craig Doyle as well as guest Isla Traquair. Josie challenged Gyles on the “offensive” comments former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson made about the Duchess of Sussex in a scathing newspaper column. When Gyles told everyone to “move on”, viewers blasted the former MP for “ignoring this level of disgusting hate speech”.

Jeremy’s attack on Meghan Markle in The Sun was deplored by Josie, Isla and Craig on the ITV talk show.

However, Gyles said: “We are playing his game, we are talking about it.

“It’s done to draw attention and it’s great for The Sun and it’s great for him as he thinks he’s being heard.

“I think if you haven’t got something positive to say, don’t say anything. That is my view – just shut up.”

He continued: “It’s just giving for fuel and getting more indignant, the best thing to do is silence.”

Gyles told everyone to “move on” from the column, but Josie highlighted how she felt it was offensive towards women.

Isla branded the column “disgusting” and she condemned it as she struggled to read out parts of it aloud on This Morning.

Gyles suggested people should put Jeremy’s comments “under the cat litter box”.

This Morning fans lashed out at Gyles on Twitter, with Jon Wallace penning: “No, Gyles. The answer is not to ignore this level of disgusting hate speech. It’s incredibly dangerous and beyond disgusting. #ThisMorning.”

Juliet McKee shared: “I’m with Isla and Josie, we don’t just brush stuff like this under the carpet and try to ignore it. Easy for Gyles to say! #ThisMorning.”

Sarah Daynes said: “Gyles, it’s very easy for you as a white man to say let’s not talk about it- it doesn’t affect you! You have that luxury. You should speak out against hate talk, not sit in your ivory tower. #ThisMorning.”

Sean noted: “Fair play to @Josiestweet for pulling Gyles trying to sweep that misogynist Clarkson s***e under the rug. #ThisMorning.” (sic)

Despite the backlash, other viewers agreed with Gyles’ comments about Jeremy’s column.

Bernie Robinson said: “Not having seen what was written. Having heard it in slightly more detail on #ThisMorning what he has written does sound rather bad though. I am with Gyles Brandreth talking about it, it gives it more publicity.” (sic)

@UKTVForever said: “#ThisMorning Petition to give Gyles his own TV show.”

Jeremy said he’s “dreaming of the day when [Meghan] is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her”.

The Sun has been contacted by Express.co.uk for comment.

Jeremy also said in the column, which was published on Friday: “I hate her. Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level.”

The 62-year-old claimed “everyone” his age agrees with him about the Duchess.

This Morning airs on weekdays from 10am on ITV.
