Tragic news as Lola is told how long she has to live in EastEnders

There was unbearable pain for Lola Pearce-Brown (Danielle Harold) and Jay (Jamie Borthwick) in Monday (March 27)’s episode of EastEnders, when Lola was called to an early appointment at the hospital and the couple were given some terrible news.

Last autumn Lola discovered that she had a brain tumour. An operation failed to remove all the tumour and she was told that it was growing quickly and was incurable.

Lola has resolved to live her life as fully as possible, and she and soulmate Jay got married in emotional scenes in February.

As well as having a new husband and trying to spend as much time as possible with her daughter Lexi (Isabella Brown), Lola’s world has recently been rocked by the arrival of her mum Emma (Patsy Kensit) on the scene.

Emma abandoned Lola when she was a small child, but explained her reason for this was that she had to get away from Lola’s dad, who was abusive. Although Emma was guarded and kept secrets from her daughter, more recently she’s been more open with Lola and has pledged to be by her side no matter what.

As for how long Lola has to live, there was speculation that she would be dead by Christmas as the special flash-forward sequence that was aired recently in the show featured a framed photograph of Lola on the bar at the Queen Vic – something that often happens when a Walford resident dies.

Sadly now we know that it’s going to be even earlier than that after Jay told Lola that the hospital called and wanted her to go in for an urgent appointment. While the couple were hopeful that it could be good news, their fear was that it would be the opposite.

Jay’s face as they sat down in the doctor’s office revealed he already knew what was coming and it was a moment he’d tried to prepare himself for.

The doctor said that a recent scan had shown the tumour was growing again. Lola asked if that meant another round of chemo, to which the doctor replied that any chemo now would be purely palliative.

An emotional Lola couldn’t speak and looked to Jay to ask the question they both dreaded the answer to. He asked the doctor ‘how long?’

‘We’re talking six months at best,’ was the devastating answer, as Lola’s tears started to fall.

EastEnders continues Tuesday March 28 at 7:30pm on BBC One.
