Reports of Yellowstone ending with season five emerged earlier this year after it was reported Kevin Costner was keen to scale back his time on the Paramount Network hit. Nevertheless, there’s still a whole second half of the fifth run to complete before any concrete news on Yellowstone’s future emerges. But any hopes of the series returning to screen to hit the initial summer 2023 release window appears to have been dashed by Rip Wheeler star Cole Hauser.

Hauser took to the stage at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo last week where he took part in a Q&A with fans.

FOX 26 Houston was on hand to capture the event where Hauser delved into life at Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Cowboy Camp’ as well as what lies ahead.

However, while he avoided addressing Costner’s future in the series, he did reveal filming is still yet to begin on season five, part two.

The revelation came when Hauser was asked if he had a favourite role on his impressive CV, to which he said: “You know, I never look at them that way.

“They all have a piece of my heart and certainly this one [Rip] does as well.”

He continued: “You know, we’ll see what’s next but right now I’m focussed on giving you guys 5B, you’ve been waiting for it a little while!

“But we’re trying to go back to work in May so hopefully that’ll happen.”

Hauser’s update appears to diminish any hopes that a summer 2023 release could be on the cards given the time it’d take to film, edit and produce an entire half of a Yellowstone season.

Plus, Hauser aired on the side of caution by suggesting a May return date to filming was provisional.

Yellowstone season five hasn’t been on the air since January 1 although Paramount has given fans their fix of Dutton drama in the prequel series 1923.

While the Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford-led spin-off has already been greenly for season two, a potential sixth season of Yellowstone remains in doubt.

It was even reported by Deadline back in February that Yellowstone would come to a close but Matthew McConaughey had been lined up to lead a new instalment in the franchise.

However, a Paramount spokesperson poured cold water on the reports at the time, saying: “We have no news to report.

“Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come.

“Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built.

“Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.”

Costner’s work schedule is reportedly at the centre of the uncertainty as the Golden Globe winner focuses on other projects.

The actor is starring in and directing a groundbreaking Western epic of his own titled Horizon.

Therefore, fans will just have to sit tight to see what exactly the future holds for the Yellowstone universe.

Yellowstone seasons 1-5a are available to stream on Paramount+ in the UK now.
